Wonder how this compares to something like a 7900GT, other than the obvious DX10.
Also, not too crazy about MSI, would like to see some other mfr, but will have to wait it out.

If I'm not mistaken the new DX10 cards don't have pipes, they have streams. And...uhh, I dunno, my 8800GTS has 96 streams...

Better than a X1950 pro?

Performance-wise? Not likely. But feature-wise, well, it does support DX10.

If that is true, then the price should come down a bit since x1950Pro can be had for around $135.

Nah, the marketing of DX10 as a feature will be enough for people to go with an 8600 GTS over an X1950 pro, I would think.

Of course, without some good benchmarks, we are all talking out of our rears here.

Just don't make the mistake I made when the FX series came out. I bought a FX5200 thinking it would be better than the TI4200........

Looking at those scores, I have to wonder if adding dx10 features to upcoming games is going to slow down the card even more...?

Not trying to upset the thread here, but here are some thoughts. If you want a basic DX10 card, then I think this might be a good buy. But honestly, if you want to play games, why not go for an 8800GTS 320MB. The eVGA version sells for 259 AR (279 - 20MIR). You are going to be able to play games with nice framerates (up to 1600x1200) and this will apply to the future games that should be coming out.
Anything above that resolution and you should consider a GTS640MB or a GTX.

I just cant figure out why NVIDIA would release a card that is just not going to cut it on games like Crysis, Call of Juarez, or any of the demanding games. I know cards eventually go obsolete quickly, but the 8600 series just seems to be at a disadvantage right from the start.

Yeah, I agree with you. But I think it is a decent card for people who have small budgets and (17in LCD's). Or just for people who don't game a lot.

this is the card that every oem is going to put in their comp who want to have a "dedicated video card". It's cheap, powerful enough, and has DX10 capabilities. This is not for the gamer, it is for the casual user that wants a dx10 capable card for vista.

Cool! Here they all come . . .

How long do think it will be before a passively cooled 8600 gts comes out? XFX has one for the 7950gt so it shouldn't be too hard for a 8600gts right?

Yeah, anything was possible to do with DX9c (IIRC). And efficiency is what we will see with DX10 and future versions as well. That's not a bad thing, and well, that's really the only path they can take from here on.
