I was thinking of my jetta continues to limp onward, I could just keep it for shitty weather. Its not like its worth much to sell. Then when I graduate in about 12 months I can replace it with either another sedan or the F150 I've always wanted.

But now that I got to talking about selling. I've never actually traded in a car what you guys reckon for this car, you think might flatout refuse to take it due to its tranny problems? according to KBB its worth around a thousand I think. In their worst condition I could click on, "fair" I think it was.

Are you financing or paying cash? Many banks will rape you on a loan for a 10 year old car. Also, the f body will probably have more little issues but will be easier to work on.

You bring up a good point, yes, I was actually hoping to finance it... As I do not have 6 to 8 grand to give them outright. Is the cutoff 10 years?

As far as working on it, I enjoy that sort of thing. I know my way around tools and such.

If you don't mind the barge-type car you can always look at things like the Chevy / Buick / Pontiac / Olds type cars. (Impala, Malibu, Lesabre, Park Ave, Lacrosse, Lucerne, Bonneville, G6, Aurora, etc...)

I'm not sure which are more reliable than others, but I've seen the 3800 V6 go for 200-300k miles. I bet they're also significantly cheaper to work on than your current VW

Yeah, I know of the 3800's longevity, although some of those have 3500 as well, dont know as much about it. I liked the idea of the Lucerne, but it turned out too be a bit too expensive, the G6 is a good thought though. As is the Lacrosse, it has that 3800 I see.

Never really looked into GM's apart from Impala, Malibu, Cobalt. All three of which make me yawn. Unless ofcourse its Cobalt SS with that 240hp turbo engine, but that, I'm afraid, will cost too much.

I drove a 6 speed Camaro SS through 3 West Michigan Winters. Oh what fun!

I forget what tires they were. I do remember that once I got moving forward I had to maintain moving forward. Stopping and moving forward again was the problem.

I am currently particularly curious about how this sort of thing works

I just looked at penfed and they don't list restrictions for age, only if the car is over 100k miles. YMMV of course.

how about a grand prix GTP? supercharged 3800 is fun. i had a 97 2dr (i think the 2dr looks better than the 4dr, imo) for a few years. sold it to a friend of mine last summer. its still running good at 146k miles. they look good (especially lowered 1.5" to remove the 4x4 look), run good, get decent mileage, FWD for snow, easy to work on and parts are cheap (there's a bazillion 3800's around so parts are plentiful). i prefer the 97-03 body style personally but the 2dr was only offered 97-2001 if i recall. those would definitely be in your price range if not under for some with a few more miles.

Hmmm, those are cool. I also even found a grand prix GXP that had just a tad over 100k in my price range, it looks pretty damn sexy. The GTP's are pretty cool too though, its just I see Grand Prix's everyWHERE lol.

I just bought me a 2002 acura rsx for 8200. That's from the dealer too so private sale should be even less. I would definitely give the rsx a try. They are very fun to drive, abundant of parts available, cheap and easy to fix, and it's a Honda so you know it's reliable. They all use timing chain so it's one less thing to consider In term of maintenance.
