In the market for a Gtx 1070, is there a consensus on which are the best to get?

Like the title says, I'm in the market for a 1070. I was waiting for the $379 cards to appear (foot in mouth) but that looks like that's not happening anytime soon and I saw some interesting cards for $429 so I thought I'd investigate.

The gigabyte g1 gaming is going for $429, has 3 fans and an aluminum backplate. I was only able to find one review outside of Amazon's at guru3d and it was pretty positive. What is the consensus on this model/style (from past gpu generations) and gigabyte as a videocard brand in general?

I saw the msi armor 8g oc for the same price, 2 fans albeit larger but no backplate. How does this/msi compare?

I'm trying to convince myself that $50 more isn't so bad ($379+$50 = $429) as I wanted to keep my gpu purchase under $400.. But I digress.. If and when $379 1070s ever come out, how much different will they be? Will they use lower quality components? obviously lower clocks but will they essentially be the same we have now with just a settled market? ..any insight would be greatly appreciated.. To that and what the best 1070 to get is in that price range (≤$429). Thanks

From what I've seen there's hardly any difference between them. Get whichever is cheapest or has the aesthetics you want. Any difference in fan noise (based on reviews) is more than likely due to different fan curves and has nothing to do with cooling solutions.

The asus strix isn't much liked on this board because the fan profile is somewhat loud by default. I like it because it has 2 fan headers, so you can connect 2 case fans to it and the card will control the speed of them.

I think msi has ball bearing fans, that's pretty nice since they won't wear out unless you run them at full speed for a year or something.

The Gigabyte G1 1070 is the card I went with, mainly because it was the cheapest that was in stock last week when I wanted to buy one. I've been happy with it. This is my first new video card since I purchased a 660, so I've been out of the loop and am not the best resource to be giving opinions.

However, I like that this card is set by default to not even turn the fans on until it hits 50c. I don't do any cable management, my case has two intake fans on the front, two outtake fans on the back and a 120mm outtake on the top. This card sits around 35c during normal Windows 10 browsing/usage. Under the Heaven benchmark, it gets up to 62c and sits right around there.

Those numbers are pretty anecdotal, as I just started messing around with it last night.

I have the EVGA GTX1070 SC and it's solidly built with a nice backplate and quiet fans. I think as others have said, it's hard to buy a junky 1070 at this point. Most of the major manufacturers are really building the same level of quality stuff and it's tough for me to say that one brand is particularly better than the others. All have higher end models and cheaper models but we're in early in this product's life so right now they all seem pretty darn similar. I picked EVGA just for brand preference and availability reasons.

The Windforce 3x cooler is pretty good. Perhaps a bit louder than some others under load, but not dramatically (a few decibels). The MSI Armor is completely barebones (no LEDs, no backplate, etc.) and I think the heatsink isn't quite as beefy as the Twin Frozr, but it works fine. As others have said, get the best deal you can. It's not worth paying $50 for 2 less decibels of fan noise or 2 degrees better cooling under load. Your max overclock on Pascal will be determined by silicon lottery, not how many features the card has.

Everyday I'm ready to pull the trigger and everyday I haven't found the right card for the right price yet.

Also this Volta news being early doesn't really give me confidence in buying my first major videocard in over 6 years..I dont want the 1070 to be replaced in less than a year...

And when the Voltas come out, there's gonna be something else just around the corner... I followed the same train of thought myself with my previous GPU purchase three years ago and I ended up suffering from terrible FPS with newer games because I lacked adequate hardware (due to always waiting for some new release). Just buy one, the waiting game's a game that'll never end.

I'm on my summer vacation at the moment so I can afford to wait a few more weeks but come autumn, hello camp Nvidia...

AMD it can make some sense to wait for, but not NV.

There's always going to be something coming out in a years time from NV - they've been on an a fairly strict annual cycle of fairly controlled improvements for quite a while now.

I understand that something will always be cming out. But usually there is at least a full year before a new videocard comes out..I don't like the idea of that period shortening.

Just look at benchmarks. All cards are grouped together and then there is this big leap to the 1070 and the 1080. Get the 1070 NOW and enjoy it for as long as possible. And it will always play all the games now and for some time amazingly. You might want to build a whole new box someday and this 1070 could be a secondary gaming box. Who knows. But playing the waiting game will you leave you perpetually unsatisfied. When the 980/970 came out, we all knew a whole new die shrink and architecture was coming. Maxwell was pretty oldish to some degree even when it was new, you know? Things are different with Pascal. I was on the fence for a while but decided to get the 1070. I can't explain the huge grin I get when I fire up doom at my monitor's native 2k resolution with everything on ultra/extreme/nightmare or whatever and it is just perfect. You kinda don't care about having paid for it at that point.

omergerd...Jet.com has asus rog strix for $379, free shipping and no tax!

Wasn't planning on paying cash because of all the amazon gc's I have but dang I'm so close!

Anyone have any experience with Jet.com?

Edit: Pulled the trigger. Paid $383 total - no tax, free shipping! (haven't spend that much on myself in a long long time, wow!) Could have got it for $5 cheaper, but I decided to pay with my credit card for the added benefits and protection. Extended warranty and price match.

Welp...looks like the ball is now in motion to build my new computer...Here we go!

Looks like i might grab the Asus 1070 turbo this weekend due a 10% sale the local shops doing. Don't want to play the heatpipe lottery on my FT-02 so blower cards for me which works quite well with my case.

I did some searching and the Asus PCB doesn't seem to be of reference design either which is a bonus. Ill post some pics for those perhaps interested if I end up buying.

Nice. Even though it's hard plunking down that much money for a video card, it did feel like a weight off my shoulders when i finally did it. Like, OK then. I'll eat PB&J a few more times for lunch over the next few months. Whatever. No more nail biting.

People complain about ASUS RMA sometimes but I can't say that it's entirely bad. EVGA seems to have a lot of people singing their praises. I think a patient person with a legitimate dud card isn't going to get totally screwed by any of the major manufacturers. If you're going to remove the heatsink and do some custom stuff with your card or plan on ocing it or messing with the vbios, i dunno, that opens the door to problems.

wtf!? How is that possible...The clocks are close to the bigger ones? Why arent all cards mini?

edit: Ironic how this is relevant now...ugh...The card will only fit the case I want to buy if I remove the HDD cage, which I kinda need...Is it easy to convert 5.25" bays to 2.5"?

I bought the MSI Armor at Fry's for $429. It's always nice to be able to walk out the door with your product at the same price as you'd get online.

Anyways, the Armor is super quiet and cool. I cannot hear it at all, even at full load, where it only hits 62 degrees max. It's quieter than the rest of my system, which is also pretty darn quiet. I'm happy, hopefully (and likely), you'll have a similar experience.

Which card is the quitest I always ask. Performance wise they're all gonna be the same, but I'd love a 1070 roundup where they show the quietest card.

When I got my 970 I was a bit disappointed that the g1 gaming gtx 970, the most expensive one, wasn't as quiet as I'd expected. Ofcourse, it comes with software that allows u to control the fanspeed, and I just manually put it at 50% for anything under 80c. It never goes beyond 78-79c now, and it's quiet. Default it'd reach 60-70% fan noise which is loud!
