Neal Peart, John Bonham, Buddy Rich are the greatest.

Recently, Danny Carey, Mike Portnoy, Thomas Hakke, Carter Beauford.

I've always thought Mitch Mitchell was under-appreciated. Here was a guy who had to keep up with some of the longest and involved guitar solos and he did it not by fading into the background like most drummers do during these moments, but played a complimentary solo right along with Hendrix.

Watch the Led Zeppelin live DVD, then tell me that Bonham is not one of the greatest drummers ever.

For sure. He was so smooth with his improv that everything just fit. The two of them playing off each other was awesome.

Then tell me his son Jason isn't just as good.

Hard to list the top three, but I will say that the one drummer who contributes most to the sound and persona of the band is Neil Peart with Rush. One of the top three drummers ever, no doubt in my mind.

Neil Peart is to drums as Jimi Hendrix was to guitar. However, he was heavily influenced by Buddy Rich and more recently Gene Krupa. Many would consider both of those better than Neil. He was also influenced by Keith Moon and John Bonham. Bonham might have been more influential to todays drummers had he lived longer. But flair, speed, and technical ability do not make a great drummer. And a great jazz drummer doesn't mean they will be great in rock. Buddy and Gene probably would not have been great rock and roll drummers and Bonham would not have been a great jazz drummer. Neil is both.

Another thing to consider is their ability to play something other than their own music. Take Anton Fig...no one has mentioned him yet but his ability to play ANYTHING at a moments notice is one of the things that earn him a spot near the top. A great drummer isn't the one who has the baddest solo. It's the one you don't notice until he/she makes you notice them. One who can play with a band and make the whole band sound good.

top 3 in what, musicality, technical ability, drop dead sexiness, penis size?

notable mentions for me: chad smith, nick mason

Travis Baker IS pretty good but i'd rather not listen to his music

Barker isn't bad i'll agree, but fast != good
I agree fast != good, but you can't tell me after watching that video that Barker doesn't kick ass. Granted the drums weren't real technical but he pounds the fsck out of them, does it fast as hell, and is spot on the whole time. He's one talented dude.

I can't really say anything about the other guys mentioned in this thread... I've heard the names before of course but don't listen to any of those bands. I'm not saying Barker is better than them, just putting another name out there.
