They're proud of distinguishing themselves from the North, culturally and ideologically. Not only that, considering that the flag is meant for battle, the South has a tradition of excellence in military tacticians, much moreso than the North.

I just have to assume that you are totally ignorant of history based on your clueless statements.
Furthermore southern pride is not so different that pride in one's state, school, football team, and so forth. Having now lived in both parts of the country, there is most definitely a different "feel" to life in the North as opposed to the South but you can also find that in all sorts of different regions of the US, not merely in some arbitrary North/South line.

The primary reason for that was the location of arms manufacturers (most manufacturing really) was in the North.

We have freedom of speech and expression. You're sounding like you don't know enough about the flag.
Germany is not a good role model when it comes to freedom.
Not everyone who puts the flag on his car supports slavery. It is Southern pride to many. I've seen Europeans wear it, Asians wear and people all over the world wear it. To some it is a symbol of rebellion.
