I have to say I don’t think I would ever think it merited an op-ed but it’s not like she’s wrong. What kind of psychopath goes around making out with people in comas?
...
To be clear the prince had no idea his kiss would wake her up. If he had actually known it would help her then I would totally agree! It's kind of like CPR - if you know doing it will help someone then by all means go put your mouth on theirs. Everyone will be grateful! When in doubt though, probably best to keep your hands and face to yourself.

Do you even know the story? How do you come up with that crap?

I'm not sure why Bell chose this story to teach her daughters about kissing someone without permission.
http://disney.wikia.com/wiki/The_Prince
The Evil Queen, jealous of her stepdaughter's beauty, forces her to work as a servant in her castle. As Snow White works, she sings "I'm Wishing", attracting the attention of the Prince, who's passing by on his horse. As she sings into the well, performing a duet with her echo, she's startled as the Prince suddenly joins in. She runs into the castle, and watches as he sings "One Song". The two fall in love with each other. Watching from above is the Queen, who angrily closes the curtains of her window in jealousy.

When the Queen arrives, disguised as an old hag, to poison Snow White, she, knowing of the romance between the girl and the Prince, fools her into believing that the Poisoned Apple is a magic wishing apple, capable of making her greatest desire a reality. Snow White wishes to live with the Prince and, taking a bite, falls to the floor, taken by the Sleeping Death. Though the seven dwarfs succeed in chasing the Witch to her doom, Snow White remains uncured; the dwarfs place her in a glass coffin and take her to a clearing in the forest.

Meanwhile, the Prince had been searching for Snow White following her mysterious disappearance from the castle. During his travels, he learns of a maiden that lies in a glass coffin, and visits the vigil's location in the forest. He recognizes the maiden as Snow White and sorrowfully sings a reprise of "One Song" as he places one last kiss on his deceased love. To the surprise of the prince, and surrounding seven dwarfs, Snow White awakens from her curse through "true love's kiss" and warmly embraces her prince. Reunited, the Prince and Snow White ride off to the former's castle to finally begin their lives together.

Haha I sure do know the story but I'm not sure you do.

The sum total of their 'romance' is that he sang a song to her from the ground while she stood on a balcony. If you think singing a song gives you license to start kissing people while they are in a coma (or in this case, believed to be a corpse) I hope you know a good attorney.

So someone gets offended and then conservatives get offended that this someone else was offended?

This is like expecting 1" of snowflakes and getting 2" instead.

Silly as this sounds I respectfully disagree.

1. Its fiction
2. Not a makeout but a simple peck on the lips.
3. I would think 99% of women would be grateful if you woke them out of a coma this way.

I may be wrong about #3 but maybe some women can chime in.

That being said there are some things in cartoons created back then that today are pretty fucked up. I don't think this is one of them.

It's a bit creepy if you really think about it (like most fairy tales.)

If you walk around the coma ward at your local hospital trying to kiss unconscious women I think you would find:

1. No one looks like snow white. More like IVs and bed pans.
2. Claiming you are trying to wake them from a magical curse will not be a sufficient defence to LEO

Its also a pretty safe position to say tricking children with candy and putting them into ovens is also bad.

Altho, I wish someone had made that PSA before my daughter's 6th birthday...a lot of legal bills and hard feelings l could have been avoided.
Thanks for nothing OP and Disney actress lady.

Maybe explained by cultural relativism? We have liberal developed countries with consent at 13-14. Not going to get worked up over some scene in a movie of a good bye kiss for someone he thinks is a corpse. Is she concerned this is around the age children kiss other children innocently without permission?

Cartoon characters repeatedly do things which are impossible and/or absurd if IRL, like falling off cliffs and not being hurt. You figure out, even at a very young age, that cartoons are not to be taken as realistic.

Kissing your wife or girlfriend to wake them up is totally OK. In this case, the prince and Snow White weren't "together" yet, but in this fantasy/fairytale they have a "magical" connection and are fated to be together. I don't think seeing this as a child would cause them to kiss a sleeping stranger.

I must have watched who knows how many cartoons back in the 70's which contained content that would be offensive if taken seriously. Pretty sure none of it had any effect on me.

The actress was being a little hyper-sensitive here, but then again, who cares?

To be honest, I find myself thinking 'hmm, I never thought of that before, but she does have a point there...'.

Though personally, even as a child, I was never keen on stories that fetishised royalty. You get enough of that in real life in this country, thanks.

This told me more than I wanted to know about Snow White. Seems that absence of consent is only the start of it...

It didn't start off as a kiss...

In the first edition of the Brothers Grimm, a servant, who has to carry Snow White’s body in the glass coffin around everywhere the Prince goes, gets sick of doing this. He opens the coffin and slaps Snow White in the face. Once he slaps her, the apple piece falls out, and Snow White comes back to life. It is easy to see why this detail is removed by the next edition published by the Brothers Grimm. This scene further situates the dominance of males over females during this period. The male servant feels justified by slapping the Princess because she is a woman and is dead. .

Surely this account overlooks the class-oppression endured by the servant, obligated to bear the literal dead weight of the aristocracy? The slap is therefore both an reassertion of patriarchal male-dominance and simultaneously an expression of the resentment of the proletariat towards the oppressor class. An early example of intersectionality, I guess. Politics is a complex business.

On today's edition of conservative hypocrisy...

I do love how they like to bitch and moan that liberals take celebrities too seriously, yet they're the ones that can't STFU about them, and regularly are the ones that vote them into office.

Cognitive dissonance and projection are the twin pillars of modern US Conservatism.

LOL. C’mon. It’s a fairy tale. Love at first sight and all that.

I wonder if he even read his own article.

Based on how regularly they cite things that often don't at all support their claims (in fact, I'd say its more common that it outright refutes their claims), I'm really starting to wonder how many of them can actually read at anything beyond like a 2nd grade level. This has been a recurring problem, and I don't think its just them trying to distort things, I think they genuinely do not understand jack shit about most things they read. Which, it really doesn't even matter if its intentional or out of pure ignorance, its their malicious intent that is the real problem.
