Have you signed up for something like this? Are they legit?

They're usually 1 - 2 hours and pay in CASH, no social security number, no taxes, no checks, cash as in cold hard cash.

Last week I participated in a focus group about pretzel snacks. The focus group had 3 guys including myself and the woman asking the questions. We were asked about brands we're familiar with, what we thought of potential ads, and how we think these products can improve. The focus group was 1 hour, afterwards they handed me an envelope with $60 cash.

I do these all the time....they always have them in my area. I once got $200 for an hour ot looking at potential ads for a company and saying what I thought of them....your opinion is worth a LOT of money to some companies

No and I don't know if they are legit. I would be cautious since they request $24.95 for "information" (no guarantees) on how to make money from home. Sort of sounds like those "make money from home licking envelopes, call 1-800-sucker for more information" ads you see in newspapers.

I would also check out JancyOnline.com AFAIK they don't require $$ for "information". I have a few friends who have used this and have good things to say about it. Unfortunately they don't pay a lot $8 - $10 on average. Most of the mystery shopping assignments in my area have been Hollywood Video and Round Table Pizza. Getting paid to review pizza and movies

That is so true. I forgot to mention they always have sandwiches and cold soft drinks at these focus groups. It's mad easy money, I'm a total focus group junkie.

There are 65 research companies in Denver, CO which is a GOOD thing. Monday call ALL of them during regular business hours and ask "do you offer any focus groups for cash"? If they do ask them to put your name and phone number on their list. Everytime they have a new focus group coming up you'll be called and pre-screened.

After 3-4 focus groups that's enough to pay for a new XBOX 360 in CASH

Do these money tre- um, "Focus Groups" exist north of the border too? I'd love to sign up for every company with a product targeting my demographic, and get paid to tell them they're retarded.

interesting... possible scam? $175 looks good

If I were in NY and had an Amex Blue cc, I would do that in a heart beat assuming it's legit.

$175 cash to sit around and talk about credit cards? LOL.

Count me in!

come to think of it... you think people would hire a bunch of people to sit around and tal kabout credit cards...? his post sounds kinda nigerian too. damn it surely is tempting.

It could be a scam but it is possible.

The best focus group I ever participated in was about laser printers.

$200 cash for 90 minutes of talking about inkjet vs laser printers.

what do you do there anyway... just a group of people talking about printers? i might want to quit my day job.

Sit in a controlled environment (window less office with chairs, desks, pens, paper and TV). It's always audio recorded, sometimes there is a one way mirror where the company reps on the other side view the focus group. Sometimes it's video taped as well. In the laser printer focus group they gave us samples of black and white laser printer documents, asked what we liked, etc. Also asked us what brands we're familiar with, etc. Turns out it was Minolta who funded the focus group but we didn't learn this until AFTER the focus group was over.

I've been on the other side of the glass, viewing the focus group. It was in different segments - the interviewer would come in, ask questions, and then leave the person alone. The person would then fill out a computer survey - they have computer monitors set up as mirrors on the other side of the glass so everyone in there could see what the interiviewee was doing, and note their answers to the questions as they filled in the blanks. The interviewer would then come back in and ask more questions, etc. The whole process took @45 minutes - one hour per candidate. I think each of them got $90? IIRC.

It was funny cause some of the people thought that nobody was watching them - one guy picked his nose THE WHOLE TIME, and one woman took all of the pens from the jar on the table, plus a huge handful of the free mints . We were dying in the back - I was afraid they would hear us!

The first two questions I always ask are, is this being audio taped or video taped? Are there people behind the one way mirror? They usually counter with "Ross, I guess you've done a few of these before?" Damn straight

If I could do that for a FT job, I'd be all over it, trust me
I was there with a rep from my company - we were doing consumer research on various new package designs for a couple different products. I sat in on sessions in Dallas and San Francisco - they also were doing research in 3 other cities, but I didn't go to those.

I would get bored doing that FT. Part time weeknights or weekends would be perfect, possibly with some light travelling.
