And I had much more respect for Apple until Steve Jobs came back. They used to make computers that were reliable and came with good service. They also sold tons of computers to schools at a discount. Now they just sell cheap marketing flash for the pleb.

You were 10 years old when that happened.

Also Steve Jobs was more than some Chinese laborer. But he was a total prick and asshole. And he died to his own ignorance and decisions not anything else. He basically had a natural sense and ability to work with aesthetics and marketing. He was able to produce products that used already existing technologies to their full potential and find ways that different technologies would work well together. I could find ways to make good products and utilize technology to their full potential but I would never have his potential for marketing. Every human has their own strengths and weaknesses.

I did not care back then but when I look over the history of Apple I do care now. Although I am not that knowledgeable about Apple so I am not aware of the business and ethical practices of the company at that time.

Depends on the business though. A hardworking go-getter can always find a way to earn money, but if your skills are in, say, machining then you won't be able to leverage those skills into a small business without capital.

I know a number of people within the motorcycle community that have prototyped a widget to fill a need at small scale and did small batches via contract manufacturing here in the U.S. and abroad eventually moving up to larger scale runs. High margin accessories... They didn't need much capital to get started.

One guy developed a whole line of goodies and then sold all the designs and rights to manufacture, etc to a 3rd party... It didn't make him rich, but it allowed him to focus on new items and not the day to day running of the business.

Three of these people are guys that I used to just ride around with who needed a widget for their own needs - built a rough copy that was useful and had people flood them with requests for their own. None of these guys were rich to begin with and only needed a few thousand in start up costs. That is pretty manageable.

That was before the iphone launch, so I didn't know if it related to my point. I'm a mobile guy, I can detail every major change in the mobile market in the past 20 years but I'm not all that knowledgeable when it comes to PCs and Macs.

I was just making a point about your point. They ousted him and Apple suffered. They went a long time without anything really new and innovative. They tried to run it without him and almost ran it into the ground. Jobs came back and soon after we got the iMac, iPod and iPhone. I don't want to take anything away from your average factory worker as without them nothing gets built, but CEO's make a break companies.

And you were able to succeed in a particular business in particular circumstances that happened to be possible with limited resources. Most startup businesses will fail. There are billions of possibilities in this universe. They are all different and can not be broad brushed with one idea or experience.

Yes... Lots fail. There are numerous chief executives that started and failed several businesses before getting smart about it or finding the right product or service need to fulfill.

How successful was Apple in the 90s including Macintoshes and their enterprise deals with education community?

Da fuck?

I worked for Apple when Jobs returned. Apple didn't begin it's rise back with the phones and tablets. It started in 1998 with the launch of the powerbook G3, iMac, and revised OS, software line and some of the best marketing on the planet. It was meteoric from there on and you can check the rise in stock price to verify from 1998.

I'm no fan of Apple, but Jobs was worth every penny of stock he took home in compensation and of course the $1 of actual salary.

They did great in the 80's. by the early 90's the Mac's share of the K-12 classroom was eroding rapidly. In 98 they still had a decent share, but nothing like it was. Also fair to point out that their share of the corporate workstation space was practically zero. Today, they are back big in education and also corporate thanks to Jobs.

Not talking about Apple gaining financial security and even even producing profitable success. I am talking about the shift of Apple from producing well made computing products to producing mass marketed fad products. From what I know I would guess it started with the launch of itunes but that the company probably was very much like it was earlier in the early 2000s or so.

I understand. I was just pointing out that that market is one I am ignorant on. I knew he left an came back but I wasn't at all sure on the timing of that and Apple market share.
