You can buy a semi-auto version of a AK rifle as long as it isn't restricted in the state you reside in. However the AR-15 is a very popular semi-auto rifle in the US.
If I'm not mistaken it's the most widely purchased firearm model in the country.

You would be correct. It's a simple, reliable template, easily manufactured, easily modified, and has enough 'tactikool' big dick energy to snag 18-30 year olds in droves.

Are u fucking kidding me?
These fuckers know their failures and dying loyalty to the NRA. Im betting the NRA put them up to this stunt to cover their ass. SICKENING.

Why can't the US government classify the AR-15 in the same group of guns that the AK-47 is classified in, so it is no longer sold.

I'm sure someone much more knowledgeable than me will point out that the two guns are not functionally the same, not in any way that can be objectively defined in a law (even _I_ could tell that the "assault weapons" category was a bit strange, being defined mainly in terms of aesthetic criteria).

But it does seem as if the aesthetics, for psychological reasons, seems to play into why spree shooters pick the AR15 as their weapon-of-choice for such things. Aside from its popularity in general, there seems to be a particular appeal "military-looking" rifles have to spree-shooters. Crime-related shootings (that also sometimes reach mass-shooter levels) seem far more likely to involve handguns.

Accusing others of trying to "politicize" the senseless violence lol.

I didn't catch it, did they blame it on Joe Biden yet?

I'm sure this has been the plan. Since Biden mentioned Gun Control a few weeks ago (or was it a week ago) it seems we've had several shootings all involving 18 year olds. I'd hate to think there is a conspiracy going on, but it should make you wonder...

Unfortunately, people will still kill others when a society has been as fucked up as ours has been. More background checks? When will this solve anything? We've already been doing that, and guess what. We have just as many deaths today as before. Someone will buy a gun for another, wipe the serial number, and give it out as a gift... (See the hood for an example) Or there will just be more robberies/burglaries to obtain them illegally. You know, since criminals don't really abide by the law... Putting in more laws isn't necessarily going to fix the problem.

Give people a reason not to kill others (and themselves) might be a better direction. All I see is a culture of death. Every single "rap" song is about "putting a cap in their ass", and every TV show has someone being killed by some psychotic method... Let's not talk about movies. What was the last movie you seen that didn't include someone dying?

But who knows... I'm not a democratic "expert" on this matter. I'm guess those experts would just say "Be gay, because its white straight males who do this."
Claiming games like GTA is the main reason for these shootings is like ignoring a police officer asking for you to pull over, to only just tell you that you left your blinkers on.

Reporter asked about tougher gun laws. Abbott both sided it and does gun laws stop shootings in Chicago, NY or California?

At least when I lived in Chicago the bulk of firearms recovered from criminal acts were obtained out of state (mostly Indidiana). The rest from a handful of shops in the exurbs. Tons of straw purchasing going on nobody puts a stop to.

I think the idea is that you could just regulate all semiautomatic rifles like you do fully automatic rifles. If the Constitution allows you to regulate sawed off shotguns as if they are fully automatic it not too much of a stretch to extend that to semiautomatic rifles.

This is the antivaxers type position. Why do they thing that will actually do the most good for the last cost, when we can do something that is much more expensive for much worse results. Not like a metal detector actually blocks the entrance, the guard would just be shot.

Not to me.... more like do the only thing we actually can do at least for the time-being.

Obviously what we need is restrictions on access to guns but GFL with that in this cesspool of a country.

What MIGHT actually get something done long-term is finding the makers of these weapons liable for the carnage they contribute to.

I live n New York, and without even searching on the internet, I have a hunch that even AR's are probably banned in my state.

Yes and no. The NY SAFE law banned the AR-15 due to certain features (I remember one part having to do with the stock), so gun manufacturers then created a SAFE-compliant AR-15. It looked goofy as hell compared to a "standard" AR-15, but it satisfied the legal requirements as to still be able to be sold in NY State. No idea what the current state of affairs is though.

From the press conference, shooter had no criminal record and no known mental health issues. I keep hearing Abbot blame it on mental health though.
He said in thhe conference that he asked te community affected as to what they are lacking, and he claimed they said mental health support for mental health issues.

The classic "well to murder a bunch of kids you have to have mental illness!"

Well, of fucking course, but this goes back to the "No Responsibile Gun Owner" fallacy.

It's just another way to deflect because it's easy to nod along when you hear this guy had mental illness and there's no culpability for our firearm culture.
