Maybe next time they should call in the SWAT team or military or marines instead of donut-loving patrol officers who would rather sit in their cars and only arrest unarmed citizens and maybe even shoot them coz they felt "threatened".

The last thing we need is more militarized police forces sitting on the sidelines ready to spring into action all over the country.

I was thinking more of get them over from the nearest base with a chopper. People are paying for military bases anyway. Use them only in extreme situations otherwise they do what soldiers do inside a military base. But of course this depends on how fast the chopper is and how far the base is from the venue of the incident.

There are general restrictions in the US around using the military for police work. People in military bases aren't just sitting around on high alert to spring into action, and neither are aircraft sitting at a high state of readiness to constantly deploy at the drop of a 911 call.

Also, SWAT teams were sold to the public on extreme situations and tons of local governments adopted them. Turns out they didn't need them, but they instead use them in all sorts of inappropriate ways to continue to justify their existence. So further militarizing things doesn't seem like a good idea.

Agreed. I don't even want school resource officers at schools. When you hire a cop or 2 to work at a school, they just end up policing the children instead of protecting them.

I do think that teachers should be allowed to become trained and carry (if they wish). Is this the best solution? NO!!! Is it a bandaid at best? Yes! We need to address the underlying issues with gun violence, but unless or until those are addressed, I can't help but think I'd want to be armed if I were a teacher and I encountered a school shooter. There is also a deterrent value to the thought that some teachers might be armed. There is a reason that none of these mass shootings happen at police stations.

I do think that teachers should be allowed to become trained and carry (if they wish).

They could also give the teachers and other staff plenty of tasers or stun guns and maybe keep a few selfless athletic/CQC trained staff on their payroll who could risk their lives and tackle the shooter and take him down in a hurry. The main reason these cowardly shooters enter school premises is because they don't think they will encounter much resistance. A few "successful" incidents where the shooter is immediately taken down in a matter of minutes in some schools and these chickenshit bitches will think twice about just walking into a school.

We barely pay teachers enough to live on, and now they’re expected to literally sacrifice their lives because LEO’s won’t? LEO’s are getting raises and way more money to special duties, with good healthcare offerings, good retirements, etc…

If we expect teachers to do this, then we definitely need to change how we pay them.

School admins get that money, so make them put themselves in harms way.

Teachers have already sacrificed their lives to protect children. There are many incidents of teachers sacrificing their lives by placing their bodies between the shooter and their students. I would never EXPECT a teacher to become armed, but I wouldn't deny them the opportunity. The ability to fire back at an attacker might significantly change the situation both tactically AND from a deterrence perspective.

We should pay them extra if they CHOOSE to become armed/trained. Absolutely. Pay them more than LEOs.

Anyhow, this is all "band-aid" fixes and doesn't solve the violence problem in America. We can do this, and it may help, but this isn't the solution.

This is the main point. It's not that we need teachers to actually be Rambo. We need the deterrent effect of the possibility that teachers could possibly be Rambo. There aren't mass shootings at police stations, and mass shooters have specifically stated that they choose "soft" targets for a reason.

But say we actually change things and mass shooters don't do their thing at schools anymore, but pick other targets like mall food courts or whatever. What did we solve? We just transferred the target of the violence from one group of people to a different group of people.

We still need solutions to the American violence problems. I don't think we are addressing the underlying causes. I believe that mass incarceration of non-violent "criminals", lack of mental health funding/treatment, poverty, etc are a big part of what we aren't fixing. Until then, I guess it's band-aids.
