Check out the CA study. It showed handgun owners had a 0.64 ratio to nonowners for all other suicides. The ratio for all-case suicide for handgun owners was about 3X for males. It also showed about half of the suicides in the 12 year following happened within a year of ownership (for obvious reasons). This study is an outlier. The paper makes the case that suicides in the home should be similar to all suicides in their sample, but something is off if not that.

It is somewhat concerning how you drew completely incorrect conclusions (well, I'll step back from that - moreso that you're using it to support a position of guns being "less unsafe") from that paper, particularly that you've said the ratios are likely lower when the paper itself suggests that given their limitations, the ratios are likely higher outside of their study design and the state of California. It's almost as if you don't know how to critically interpret scientific literature.

Biden, as the sitting president and defender of American children, Biden needs to get a lot tougher against the NRA lobbyist who Biden has acknowledged are the problem.
Biden should be in Uvalde today, in person, not tomorrow or next week but today while the NRA holds their little assault weapon jerk off fest.
Biden needs to draw clear distinctions. Biden needs to say on camera in front if millions of Americans:
I COME HERE TODAY TO JOIN IN SUPPORT OF THE UVALDE COMMUNITY WITH MOURNING THE VICIMS. WHILE ELSEWHERE IN THE CITY OF UVALDE, THE NRA LOBBYIST AND SENATE REPUBLICANS THAT ARE OWNED BY NRA LOBBYIST GATHER TO CELEBRATE THE DEATHS OF 19 CHILDREN AND TWO TEACHERS.

Thats it. Thats all that needs to be said by any sitting president.
To make that naked distinction is exactly what Biden needs to do. Just say it, just say the obvious out loud. Sure, it would make Sean Hannity go crazy on Fox, and NRA owned senate republicans would go absolutely nuts for sure, but America needs to hear it and Biden needs to say it out loud. After all, what else is Biden there for? To look pretty? Make some typical post tragedy bs statement the NRA can accept? Some bs statement that give NRA loving senate republicans political cover?
Biden.... Joe.... you know what needs to be said, and said during the same hour as the NRA gathers.

What study is close to the one cited? That study cites some (funnily enough, it also relays studies that suggest no link of increase suicide in some countries), but they are closer to CA, and they don't address the problem with people buying guns because of planning.

Uvalde is solidly Trump country. I wouldn't go there in a million years if I was Biden. Uvalde gets to live with the consequences of their votes.

What do you mean close to? I'm talking about the study out of Stanford that you were referencing and your positions your claiming it supports.

Heard on NPR that on average, the national outrage over a mass shooting lasts about 3 days.

This one might go on a bit longer, but nothing will change. In the year 2022 and in the strongest, richest country in the world, parents are reduced to basically crossing their fingers and hoping "not my child" everytime they drop them off at school or really anywhere public.

"Part and parcel" of living in the US these days. Don't get your hopes up.

You are funny. First it’s guns that kill then it’s 18 year olds that are the threat. Make up your mind. When you can make sense yourself then worry about if I can.

It's 18 year old with guns that are the threat you idiot.
It's 18 year old with guns that kill you idiot.

Was that not obvious in the previous post, or does it need to be depicted in crayon for you?

I don't know the details yet, other than my neighbors son was troubled, which I didn't know until today.

Anyway I was on the road when the ambulance and sheriffs vehicles sped past me opposite direction.

I pulled up to home, and my inlaws asked me if I knew what happened? "No" I replied, (my neighbor that lives behind my inlaws her name is Stephanie, to quote my mother in law, " her son shot himself in the head on the front porch"

My father in law said he heard her screaming, the ambulance and sheriff are still up there right now, she has no other family nearby and is friends with my wife.

Less than 10 days ago my sister in law messaged me who was shooting a gun at 10pm at night.

Very sad indeed, I may fill in details later, IDK, I have known Stephanie since we moved to KY in 2007, I hooked up her satellite TV before she moved to behind my inlaws, then moved to NC for many years and recently moved back.

To add to the perversion of doing NOTHING...
Congress will now "pretend" a desire to do something, anything, and eventually that something, no matter how half hearted, that something will make it to paper, in writing, to address the American insane love for the gun.
But we all know.... we already know that in the end and no matter how watered down the proposed gun legislation ends up becoming, we all know that republicans who dare engaged in the process will back out in the final hour. They always do.

We all know that Joe Manchin will say I JUST CAN'T SUPPORT THIS GUN LEGISLATION. The very legislation he helped write. WHY??? Because its all for show, only a game, and it is the NRA making the final decision, not a few republicans, not Joe Manchin, but it is the gun lobby deciding. The NRA.
Oh, plus, time passed and people forgot the 19 children. Forgot the 2 teachers.
So.... why would Manchin, why would a hand full of republicans even pretend concern over passing gun legislation?
??? Beats the fuck out of me.....

Which part? Guns readily available since the 19th century?

Ny SAFE:
Featureless requirements for ARs
- only fixed stocks (why?)
- no pistol grips, no thumbholes on grips (why?)
- non removable 10 rd magazines, ar must be disassembled to reload (possible reduced lethality, but easily circumvented)
- no muzzle brakes allowed (why?)
- online ammo purchases must be shipped to an FFL (why?)

Criminal easily disabled the restrictive features... Had plenty of ammo and magazines, did not get flagged.

Should we discuss the upcoming ATF rule changes for arm braces for pistol carbines?

I don’t want to try to explain the NY legislation which I am sure in some way makes sense.
I do want to address the “easily circumvented” part. Sure it may be easy to modify but the legislation makes it illegal yo do so which is an opportunity to stop a shooting before it occurs.

locks don't stop determined thieves, and yet we use them on our houses.

sometimes a barrier to casual entry is enough. yes, the determined person will easily circumvent the law. but most people aren't *that* determined.

just like building "ghost guns" (aka 80% builds) makes a firearm untraceable, most people will not go through the legwork to do it.

Maybe the frightened cops and mayor should simply lock their doors. Apparently locks in Uvadle are damn near unbreakable.

Or unnecessary, according to the actions of the person who apparently propped open a locked school door and left it unattended, and the shooter walked in.

edit: 6/2/22 Looks like that turned out to be an erroneous statement put out multiple times by the "authorities." She opened it, propped it open, later shut it but it didn't lock. I don't think anyone knows or will ever know if it was locked from the outside before she propped it open.
