I work in IT and we recently switched several Business Development personnel to Adobe Indesign from Pagemaker, illustrator, etc. At the same time we switched their computers to brand new dells. We are running into major performance issues and I was just wondering if anybody has worked with this product and would have any suggestions. Specifically, in Indesign (mainly converted pagemaker files), simply highligting text can take 5-10 seconds. We have been able to get this down by rebuilding the image we used for the computers, but we still see 1-2 second delays. This also happens when entering new text, it will print a few on the screen, then pause, then do a few more, then pause again. This happens on pretty much every computer we have tried (we deployed 18 of them). We tried doubling the ram, adding faster ram (the person that ordered these only ordered pc2700), and several different display drivers, using a driver cleaner in between. None of this seems to help.

Stats of computers:
Dell GX270
P4 2.8c 800mhz FSB
1gb pc2700 ram
Geforce 5200 128mb graphics

We have contacted Adobe several times, but each time they do not have the problem on slower computers with the same files. I dont think this is hardware related, but we have not ruled this out.

Maybe it's just the old Pagemaker files? Does this still happen if you create a new file?

Before the Dells, the only thing we had were at most 1ghz processor HP vectras, which would probably not even run indesign. I did run it on my computer (from home, I brought it in for testing) and it seemed to run smoother, however I have not tried the bigger files.

This seems to only happen on converted docs, but these have only been deployed for 2 weeks, so there arent really any big native indesign files.

could be that the converter indesign uses is just flawed, try opening up one file and copying the entire document and paste it into a new file

I bought a new Dell for doing work stuff on this year (2.8ghz p4/512mb ddr333/80gb 7200rpm seagate hdd) as well as Adobe CS. Yeah...it's slow, even with my Radeon 9600xt in there. I've been focusing on learning InDesign CS as of late, and even the startup takes awhile.
