Bingo! Actually, that Modi is worse - he actively aided and abetted religion-based riots when he was head of his state (Chief minister, same as Governor here), leading to horrifying tales of Muslim families slaughtered while police stood back, or even helped the perpetrators.
Unfortunately, that is the very platform he's fought his campaign on: fear, suspicion, and divisive politics.
Truth is, while there's a fringe in the population that's communal and bigoted, most of the voting population wants a new government just to get some change in their lives, and Modi is simply in the right place to take advantage of this wave.
He's a one-trick pony, as is his party - religion is their mantra; but the claim to be the 'saviour' of a huge swathe of people based on their religion is not easy to deliver. Give him a couple of years, and he's gonna prove himself to be a bigger pain than the current government, and will hopefully be kicked out.
