The warship will undergo extensive tests in the next few years before it is commissioned into the navy, he added.

Only the United States, the United Kingdom, Russia and France have carriers.(??)

SEVERAL years of testing!?!?
I figured months, maybe 1 yr max. does it float? can u launch and land planes on it?
testing done. fit for combat, no?

also, thought Canada had a carrier?

With the Japanese rolling out their not-a-carrier carrier, good thing there is no new arms race in Asia.

Now if only India could build an electrical system that worked more than half the time..

There's a little more involved than that, computer control testing will take 90% of that time.

This isn't the US Navy that has had experience with aircraft carriers since before world war 2. This is India's first domestically built carrier; they only have one other carrier prior to this that was purchased from the British. Carrier based naval aviation is alot more complicated than your post suggests.

Yeah, and there's a cool plane coming out called the F35 that has a vtol variant

As to an arms race in asia, I'm glad that asian countries other than china are building their navies as hedges against china, so we don't have to be the only ones spending $.

hmm wonder why they don't have an island on it. Is the bridge under the flight deck?

Flush deck aircraft carriers have been tried before and abandoned.

The newest US carrier designs will have the island moved to rear to facilitate aircraft handling.

Isn't that an old Russian carrier, much like the Chinese one?

Wikipedia says: Yes. Double checking says no.

Apparently the Chinese got a Kuznetsov class hulk via Ukraine, which is what the Russians are currently fielding, whereas the Indians got an old Kiev class decommissioned boat, and had the Russians recycle that into a working ski-jump configuration.

That picture is probably from the period before reinstalling the island. There was a first series of sea trials already, which failed with boiler issues, so I expect it to look more finished now, than in that pic.

Edit: so it's both a home-grown carrier which will take years to be finished, and the Kiev class, which will probably be commissioned next year.

We did up until 1970. Not much need for one. Canada doesn't have much of a navy or air force. Canada's military is mostly land based. The two other branches combined are only half the size of the army. There are plans in the works to build new multi-role ships that can carry up to four large helicopters with hanger facilities.

UK is using their carrier as a helicopter carrier only, I think they retired whatever aircraft was on it. So they're practically without an aircraft carrier.

Italy has aircraft carriers too.

they're probably kinda useless for Canada anyway, apart for the american invasions you sound more about self-defense than world domination.

Canada needs a strong navy that can carry the many troops needed to retrieve the dangerous Danish flags and bottles of alcohol left behind on Hans Island
