It's hard to find out who are the bad irresponsible and mentally unstable or radicalized gun owners. And they make the good owners look bad.
The hardest part is that even if you have a questionnaire a 1000 questions long and a shrink session to get a gun permit.. how do we know the person won't become a bad irresponsible and mentally unstable or radicalized gun owner 20 years down the line after he sees his spouse having an affair or getting passed over for promotion at work repeatedly?
You can't know. Life is not 100% safe, never has been, and never will be. We can work to reduce the incidents while still maintaining our rights, but the goal shouldn't be 100% prevention because that could only exist in a completely alien form of governance. Security vs freedom, and such.
