I was wondering the other day: what kind of sports are popular in India? I can't ever recall seeing any baseball, football, or basketball players who are 100% Indian who were drafted from there. Maybe someone familiar with the country can shed some light on the subject.

Funny, but I just found this...

Singh and Patel, who worked out in front of scouts from the Pirates and other Major League organizations on November 12 at the University of Southern California, emerged as the top two participants of the "Million Dollar Arm" contest in India. The contest concluded its first ever edition this past March and had more than 30,000 entries. The winner of the contest was based on what person could throw the most pitches 85 miles per hour or faster for strikes.

Singh, who was born in Bhadoni, Uttar Pradesh, India, is the youngest of nine children in his family. Patel, who was born in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India, comes from a family of five brothers and sisters. Both Singh and Patel learned English by watching Baseball Tonight and also by taking online classes when they came to the United States beginning in May.

So apparently the Pirates have a couple of Indian pitching prospects... /cool

At this point they're willing to look anywhere to get some good talent. And if they don't work out, well, there's always next year...

Makes sense. The pirates probably have the smallest payroll in the league.

When you have a billion people to work with, chances are you can find almost any talent you want in there. Trick would be finding them.

Hmm, maybe they can do some kind of virtual thing and just leave the pitchers in India. The fans would see a hologram of a white pitcher, but some of them would say 'Psshh, I can always tell the difference'

That's actually a great idea. Instead of the Nintendo wii, we could outsource the real video game opponent to be an Indian simulating it.

Pretty much no one outside of USA plays basketball, baseball or "football".
