Yeah, India is a pretty messed up place. Despite all of its growth, and the same can be said for China, there is still massive poverty. I've read about wife burnings in India, because the husbands didn't want to give up the dowry in a divorce.

Bringing children into this world on $13 a month is a human rights violation. This woman sickens me.

1:1 translation or not, this woman couldn't even afford the most basic neccesities for her children. In my view what she did is extremely immoral i.e. she brought pain and suffering to innocent people.

Most if not all of the prosperity that india has seen in the last 2 decades has been centered and focused on the urban environment. It needs to be evenly or atleast fairly spread to the rural area because overall, India is still a agricultural economy. Its sad, but there are a few things to understand:

1. The cost of living does not translate...many people live comfortable lives for about a $1.50 a day. Yes, this family was very poor and $13 a month isnt enough anywhere.
2. People have kids with the mentality of more hands to work, not more hands to feed. This is a reality and one living in the West might not understand.
3. India cannot enforce the rules that China does to such an extent because its a democracy. They cannot force people to only have one kid.

Yes, wife burnings as well as discrimination due to the Caste system still exists but with more education and the modernization of the country, these cases are getting lesser and lesser and hopefully we can eridicate these horrendous 'customs' completely.

That's actually a good thing. Mass termination is hardly the solution.

Yeah, but there are some serious issues, democracy or not, involving that caste system and the poor in India - in addition to the problems already associated with the poor.

yes the fight against poverty in the rural areas is excruciatingly slow...but it is happening...same with the caste system

Get used to it, the U.S. is resembling more of it's own Caste system everyday.

*nod* I remember a while back, some group or other got an initiative going in India and put up billboards contrasting a woman with ~10 kids living in poverty to a woman with 2 kids living comfortably. In polls, the vast majority of people thought the woman with 2 kids must have had something wrong with her reproductive system It's not going to happen by itself, and the problem's getting worse.

It has a mixed economy but is now slowly tilting towards a capitalist one.

as a juxtaposition, america is battling an obesity problem with 66% of adults obese or overweight

the average american eats 3000 Calories/day and throws away 1000 (or each family of 4 eats 12,000 Calories, throwing away 4K)

a person is actually supposed to eat 1500 Cal/day (the 2000Kcal figure comes from pregnant/nursing mothers). although i doubt that'd make a difference, we'd stuff our faces just the same. we're eating for 3.

for example we could feed the entire continent of africa and everybody would be better off (healthier that is). not to mention we'd also save $132 billion in health costs per year.

and in America it is predicted 1 in 3 children born after the year 2000 will develop diabetes. imagine 100 million diabetics in the USA. medicare would be crushed, literally.

of course this does not address the problem of "overpopulation" in those countries/continents (althought its actually a problem of under-education)

but hey its just a juxtaposition
