Could it just be that a lot of people raised in America (Indian included) just don't see the benefit in getting a Masters or PhD?

When I finished my BE in Chemical Engineering, I was not going to go back and pursue grad school for very little incremental increase in pay. Maybe my breathern from India, whose families value MSc and PhD degrees, filled in the slack and are working hard to do what I wouldn't?

from what i know, a PhD's in engineering are really only pertinent if you wish to pursue academia, and an MS is a bit of a "professional development" type thing. not to say either are worthless by any means. how many industry jobs REQUIRE a PhD? probably only a handful, but to teach at a university, you better have that PhD in your hand.
