60% of the federal gas tax goes directly to highways and bridges. The other 40% goes to other transportation expenditures. The fund is depleted badly right now as gas usage is down but people still drive.

When I say raise gas tax I mean federal. Some states could use a raise in it as well but that is a state by state thing.

The Feds are not releasing the funds as needed - held up by political infighting

Most refineries don't shut down the entire process for maintenance, they do shut down sections which are brought back online before shutting down adjacent processes. Just like this BP shutdown, only one of the crude distillation units was shut down for repair while the other two remained in operation. However, during planned maintenance or emergency shutdown the output capacity of the refinery is reduced. The reduction in gas supplies is what sets off the price increases. For what ever reason the US upper Midwest experiences massive price swings even though wholesale gas prices stay steady. In the gulf coast region there can be 6 - 8 refineries with maintenance shutdowns at the same time and the price of gas doesn't change.

Yeah, they should have continued operating until a big explosion occurred taking out all three crude distillation units and the refinery. The loss of life would be okay as Dave needs to have cheap gas for his car and that's all that matters.

From what I read, the refinery only shut down the main distillation unit and left the smaller two running. Unfortunately, the large unit represented over half of the refinery's total capacity.

Don't worry Dave I informed Big Oil of your hate for them, they replied saying not to worry no matter where Dave lives we will perform extra maintenance at the refineries and direct distributors to overreact to all maintenance so Dave will have something to complain about.

I already have my large boat being towed behind my truck once I get there. Plan on burning many gallons of gas taking kids and grandkids out on the lake. The trailer may be a bit much. Always get a bigger truck though.

Instead there was an almost 30 cent drop over a week's time. Wish that would happen here, although Costco and Sam's are down to $2.08 which is the lowest price near me.

Places in Milwaukee are showing $2.39 (per radio).
I saw $2.44

More than when the shutdown, but $0.60-80 less than the week after.

Gas was hanging around $2 for the Labor Day Weekend but did the proverbial 30 cent jump yet again and now many stations at $2.35
