I'm thinking it will be best if young children are only permitted to play video games if they have good grades and do their chores, along with encouragement to do other hobbies as well.

Yup. This works pretty well. Kids will whine and complain, sometimes not get the games, but meh....they'll get over it.

Parents hook their kid up to a device that effectively pushes the dopamine button in the brain. You stop that feedback loop, and you might as well have just cut their arm off. The attachment is real. The "need" is real. It's no wonder a violent reaction can occur.

No science supports your claim. I don't know of one study which says that not having a Big Mac will lead to murder and they are designed to have an effect. This goes way beyond a video game, which was the last straw, not the cause of any of this.

Video game addiction is very real but video games causing violent crime is not. Video game addiction is probably part of this story worthy of discussion in its own right, but by no means is his action explained by that (alone).

How many murders a year are resultant from cutting kids off video games? That step was indeed necessary here, but if it were sufficient I imagine the life expectancy of parents to be rather short.

In the coverage I read, the dad kept his service weapon locked in his police vehicle for safety. It took the kid three tries to get it out of there. It's not exactly like he left the gun laying around for the kid to use. But, I am wondering if he saw previous violent tendencies, as virtually all the police I know want a weapon in their house if confronted by a criminal they'd had run ins with before.

The addiction some kids have to video games is real. It consumes them and when taken away some kids react extremely poorly. There’s all kinds of videos of kids screaming and breaking stuff and even violenve. This seems like an unfortunate escalation of that.

Don't connect this with Videogames. It's entitled children - that is the root of the problem which stems from shit parenting.

Nah I disagree. Spoiled and such may have played a little bit but the kid I’m sure had some violent mental instabilities going on and couple that with a video game addiction was a recipe for what we’ve got. Dad taking away the thing he’s addicted to was the trigger and due to whatever screwed up thing in his mind where he can’t either recognize right from wrong or control himself when upset made him in an emotional rage get a gun and shoot pops.
