I honestly believe the conservatives want liberals focused like a laser beam on Russia while they loot the treasury, gut internet privacy, trash the education system, etc.... At this point I am seeing far far far far more influence on our system by corrupt American billionaires and their political cronies than Russia. I see the influence of American billionaires as an existential threat to our system. Russia as a threat is not even on my radar.
I'm not sure they do. It's not so much Russia itself as the fear that Mueller is working his way up the chain and may well put Republicans in an 'impossible' situation where they have to take action against Trump to avoid facing a rout in 2018 or 2020. Not to say that Republicans won't try to avoid action if they think there's even the slightest chance of winning the vote, but they don't want to even get close to that possibility.
