Word on the street is Cohen is in the proffer process working on a plea deal. Of course that could fall apart at any time but it could take a while too.

I expect Cohen to play out like Flynn. Without warning, he will plea guilty to something in exchange for cooperation. My guess would be tax fraud.

If he wasn’t already dealing with prosecutors he would have likely already been indicted.

When Trump said "I always liked Michael" it was the kiss of death. In Cohen's place, I'd sure as Hell take it that way. The feds are rarely in any hurry over something like this. They're only beginning to examine the seized evidence-

When & if they can build a solid case they'll offer Cohen a chance to come to Jesus...

Have a source for this? It seems likely given that Cohen could easily have faced indictment by now, but a link would be swell.

About this source: I’ve been following this account for over a year and she has proven over time to be one of the most credible for getting information (Seth Abramson level).

Still, take this FWIW.

https://twitter.com/writesmitty/status/1024850561450037248?s=21

“I am told by a federal prosecutor friend that Michael Cohen is now receiving 24/7 federal witness protection. He is not in the witness protection “program,” but he is receiving “interim protection” during his proffer period, which began ****, and is ongoing.

The proffer process can break down at any time. I am unaware of any particulars relating to his proffer interview matters, other than that the proffer process has begun. This may also explain Trump’s unhinged tweet rage this morning.

Federal criminal targets may “proffer” before or after indictment. When a target proffers pre-indictment, the target receives more valuable consideration in the plea negotiation process, and sometimes can even avoid charges or can minimize potential charges.

That one proffers does not mean he is a "cooperating witness.” It merely means a dialogue has begun between a target and the federal investigators/US Atty.“

Well, let's see... this parrots lies, such as the myth that the Steele dossier was created for the DNC (it was created for a conservative group during the Republican primaries); it treats speculation as if it were fact; it acts as if serial liar and obstructor Devin Nunes were a reliable source of knowledge.

So, no, it won't get attention. And there's a ludicrous premise here: that we should let the Trump family off the hook for its actions. Even if we believe the lie that Clinton set this up, that still means the Trumps voluntarily met with Russians promising dirt to skew the election. You're basically admitting that Trump is an unscrupulous asshole who couldn't say "no" when an authoritarian government came knocking at his door in a bid to manipulate the vote. Any person with integrity would have said "no thanks."

Wait... So Don Jr agreeing to the Trump Tower meeting with Russians... That was all an elaborate entrapment setup orchestrated by the Clinton camp and Russians? To what end?? Everything else... Hacked emails, data mining Americans on Facebook, shady meetings in the Seychelles... That was all part of Clinton's grand master plan...to NOT win the election and saddle America with the shame of a Trump presidency??

Oi, can't find my Simmons gif but this'll have to do

Guess they want to let their attempts to discredit the witnesses stand. That ain't going to work given the amount of evidence, documentation etc... from bank officials who testified.

A delusional op-ed with no evidence?

Only in your conspiratard echo chamber.

You're such a dupe for projectionism.

Meanwhile, IBD is a hard right conspiratard site who features exclusively content from far right think tanks that unsurprisingly, has no author named.

My gawd you're so easily duped by shit you want to believe.

I am assuming that they received enough reassurance from Mannafort that a pardon is on its way? I mean, why waste your time working for all that money when your client is just going to be pardoned on through...also I wonder if they started asking themselves how this loser is going to be able to pay their fees after his estate is liquidated by the IRS?

There really isn't much of a defense they can present. The evidence seemed to be quite convincing. Gates wasn't their only hope and his testimony wasn't unsupported. The mountain of evidence from the bank witnesses should be more than enough to sink him as it backed up everything Gates said.

Maybe they think they have enough to hope for a hung jury. I think they know they are screwed and are hoping for something to save them.

Legal twitter is pointing out that this isn't uncommon when calling witnesses could do the defense more damage, get the jury to put more burden on them, or the defense case is terrible.

Barring something miraculous Manafort looks pretty fucked. Yea Gates is a scumbag but there are documents.

Yeah they will assert the prosecution did not prove beyond a reasonable doubt. Once you start mounting a defense people compare the two against each other. Like I said this seems to be a big hail mary.

I suspect the strategy is to have the verdict thrown out on appeal because of judicial error. Dunno who's paying for Manafort's defense but they seem to have plenty of money.

Meanwhile, he's still locked up & will remain so at least until the conclusion of the second trial. If they can miraculously win that then he might be out on an appeal bond.

Probably not, but they can only play the hand that's been dealt.
