So let me just paint a picture for you. When you land in Bali there are like 4 signs on the way in to immigration and customs that tell you how much shit you're going to get into if you try smuggling drugs. Maybe more but I saw 4. Only a complete idiot would attempt this.

They are pretty clear on how they see things. Although I question their math they look at drug smuggling as killing their kids. They have no tolerance for it.

The customs form for Indonesia clearly states that drug smuggling carries a death penalty. Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand are no different.

Shes only 56 for those thinking this was some 70+ year old woman not right in the head.
She was also carrying around 2.6million worth of cocaine.

It sounds like she was doing it under duress, if that is true, Indonesia should let her go. Of course I don't think forgiveness is in their vocabulary.

Ordinarily I wouldn't have any problem with the penalty, but I'd like to know more about the claims of the threats on her family. If there's some evidence that her family was in danger if she didn't do it, then I think some leniency is appropriate.

Imagine instead this was say a mid-20s male. Would anyone care that they were being executed?

I also don't really buy the whole "they threatened my family" thing. Ask yourself how many times have you or anyone you knew been asked to smuggle millions of dollars of narcotics across an international border under duress?

I always have a problem with t, but I also don't go to these countries for a reason. I wonder if her claim was investigated as it obviously is meaningful. Otherwise she shouldn't be that surprised.

Only thing I have something against is the death penalty. Else she gets what she deserves. I dont believe her story either. Plus even if true, she should have gone to the authorities.

I've warmed considerably to the death penalty in the last year or so, but I don't see it as an appropriate penalty for anything drug-related.

I look down on drugs and drug use as pathetic and stupid, particularly something like cocaine... but I advocate full legalization.

I've traveled in and out of Indonesia more than 100 times between 1993 and 2010, Indonesian customs x-rays baggage and carry on bags coming into the country. I've had my bags searched several times due to the fact I had electrical/electronic tools in my checked baggage. I always had a business visa so these tools were not an issue.

She was living in Indonesia or what? She is a drug smuggler. She is poisoning your kids and other people's kids with her drugs. She is selling pain and misery. She deserves to die. You know when people sell illegal drugs, this causes gangs to shoot and kill innocent people.

All drug dealers deserve to die the worst possible death immaginable.

So why is it even important that this woman is a Grandmother? This is so you will feel sympathy for a murdering sleazebag. The fact that she is a grandmother means she deserves an even harsher penalty.

Do not carry illegal drugs into Asian countries. Most, if not all, have the death penalty if you do so.

<<-----have been to numerious Asian countries for business and fun for the last few years and will be there again shortly.

Her story sounds stupid anyways. If her family was being threatened you go to the police. You stand very little chance of not getting caught with millions of dollars of drugs on you. It's a suicide mission.

Maybe it's because I've already heard the horror stories and read the books. Each time I go to South East Asia I break down my bag and repack it just in case somebody decided to sneak something into my bag. It's probably a pointless exercise since those who claimed someone put it in their bag were probably lying. I'm not taking any chances though.

I say SEA since pretty much every country there has the same laws and the same type of notices. I can't remember if it was Singapore or Bali but one goes so far as to have a BANNER hanging that says you'll be killed if caught with drugs.

Why is this even news?

She broke the law, she will be punished according to the laws of that nation.

Big deal.

If she's lucky they kill her soon. I think the worst part about the whole thing isn't the firing squad but is living in their prisons.

As an Indonesian I applaud the country's stance on drug trafficing. Whether drugs should be legal or not she knew the risks. If her story is true or has some weight I am sure it will be investigated.
