I agree with many other posters here that Indonesia is not backward and also not considered backward by the rest of the world. And that Indonesia has the right to set their own laws. As I also note the USA is considered rather backward by the rest of the world for prosecuting Juveniles as adults. Not to mention our drone policies that alienates almost everyone, when oops, when we kill the innocent instead, in foreign lands, we wash our hands, when we would never get away with those same policies inside of the USA.
As I also agree 100% with Don Vito in opposing the death penalty period, my opinion only extends to my own country, namely the USA.
As for the British Grandmother, who found herself subject to the laws of Indonesia, she violated Indonesian law and has no right to claim special rights not granted to any other Indonesian resident. So I feel scant sympathy for her.
But still our drug smuggling grandma is a British national, so its up to the British government to help her. And private diplomacy by the British government almost certainly stands a far better chance than putting it into the public arena more likely to stiffen Indianian resolve.
