SIL is looking for something for her kids (6-8 y.o.) to play games like Angry Birds on. I think she is tired of them playing on her phone. Her idea was to buy two iphones without phone service. That seems expensive and how would you get the games on them?
Any ideas?

Nexus 7 is a great tablet for games and is only $200. I think the 7 inch size is also really good, light enough to play games on a while without much fatigue and big enough to interact with the games.

How cheap?

Not sure how much people like 1saleaday.com though? I never used them.

Newegg and staples also had the Nexus 7 at a discount. You could probably get one for a good price on craigslist too.

Or wait until May for google i/o and we may possibly get updated tablets causing the older ones to drop in price.

Maybe a kindle fire/hd? Not sure on the performance on them.

Since the kids are young (destructive), the cheaper, the better.
Something like the kindle fire would be good. But I paid 200 for mine.

Without phone service? I am thinking about used iPod Touch…It is much like an iPhone..Kids can't tell the difference and iPod Touch is cheaper.

Why not just get a used tablet then? Kindle Fire or a B&N Nook Tablet. Or even a Nook Color with CM7 on it.

Asus's MeMoPad? 160 new, but crappy single core Via CPU.
Or one of the Chinese tablets . . . quality varies widely.

This is just what I was thinking. The new Asus MeMo. It is very basic on specs...but that might be ok. I'm sure it's plenty for Angry Birds.

Something to consider about going cheaper... The Nexus 7 is by far the best value you will find. Those cheaper tablets are a huge step backwards in performance and quality. Those cheaper tablets have displays with poor viewing angles and resolutions, they use really low end processors, they may skimp on memory, they may have older slower versions of Android that will never be updated.

I recently bought an IBM X41 tablet PC for $20 without HDD, but you can find the likes of this for $100-200 in perfect working order. Not sure if itll work for angry birds, but I do know angry birds came out for PC not long ago, so you may want to check this out.

The x41 is a pentium mobile 1.5ghz usually with 1gb ram, I have 2gb in mine and am ordering an SSD for it. You can get a 1.8" 44 pin to mSATA adapter for them and they perform quite nice with that even with win7 on them, they come with xp tablet 2005.

It has one of the worst speakers I've ever heard on a mobile device, I wouldn't want to game on a Nexus 7. Imho half of the gaming experience is the sound.

I put CM 10 on our Nook Color for the same purpose.
Not sure what the current market prices are for em.

Worked out great.
A little too great...little buggers need to go play outside.

Yeah, the speaker sucks. And it's going to suck on the cheaper tablets too. Very few tablets use acceptable speakers.

Kindle Fire HD is really awesome if you need good speakers. Though you'll have to make other sacrifices for it (slower processor, no Google Play without rooting).

Though for gaming I don't really care much about the speaker quality, it's mostly when watching videos that the piss poor speakers on most tablets make me cry.

Instead of IPhones, how about inexpensive Android phones? $60. Kyocera Event at VirginMobile website. Free shipping. Pretty sure no sales tax. Don't activate. Turn on WiFi and you're set....................

A Nexus 7 has a high chance of breaking in a single drop and the repair cost is almost as much as a new device. They're very fragile.

Make of that what you will.
