My girlfriend's computer need a new video card. What would be the best choice for around $150? She wants to run World of Warcraft and Sims2 with decent resolution and quality.

Best choice in that price range is a 6600GT. The lowest priced ones are hanging around $170.

You didn't specify if you want AGP or PCIe...

Some choices you might consider (in rough order from slowest to fastest):

AGP: Used GF4Ti4200/4600, RADEON 9600/9600Pro/9600XT, RADEON 9700Pro/9800/9800Pro
PCIe: GeForce 6200, RADEON X300, RADEON X600/X600Pro/X700/X700Pro, GeForce 6600

The 6600GT is also a good choice, but probably above your price range (usually around $180-200, barring sales or rebates).

The video card price guide published here at Anandtech earlier this week had a deal for a Radeon 9800 Pro for about $140. This is a very solid choice if you can't find a 6800GT down in your price range.

mm i guess i'll look into GeForce6600 or Radeon 9800

Just a note: the 6600gt is vastly superior to a regular 6600 (even the 256mb 6600, extra ram gets your almost nothing).

6200 > 6600 mod is starting to be un-doable now. They released another revision of the chip which can't be unlocked.

6600GT, 9800/9700Pro or 9600XT or 6600 would be my recommendations, in that order.

huh? really? so 6200 is better than 6600??

I said MOD a 6200 to a 6600.

The 6200 uses the same chip as the 6600 with disabled pipelines which can be enabled via rivatuner

Really

Where did you hear this?

I have never heard anyone not be successful in a softmod with the 6200.

I would agree if the 6600gt wasn't $10 more.
Where?

Read the 3rd post in this thread. But it's xfx, so you better hope you don't have to rma the card - if I had a quarter for every time I see someone complain about xfx, I'd be rich(er)

Thanks Munky..

I guess so.. But when someone says they want to spend $150, I sort of figure that's what they want to do.. Not spend $188, send off for a rebate, and get it 2 months later when the price of the card is now less than what I spent minus the rebate..

Get a geforce 6600 agp. Its a little cheaper than the GT and should run most games at mediums settings.

If the 6600gt is too expensive, then a 9800p would be the next best thing. In fact Im using one, and it handles HL2 and Farcry nicely at high quality settings.

Edit: BTW the 9800p is considerably faster than a 6600 vanilla.
