Not knowing or just hoping it goes away could be worse.

well it already healed up. It's just a big scab now, and some hard bluish tissue around it. But it's getting there.

Based on the symtpoms you described, I would've sought medical treatment. Those are serious symptoms, and not something I would've played with at all.

everyone says that, but why?! What did people do 150 years ago, before hospitals? Die?

Actually, yes. Ever hear of the Civil War? More soldiers died from infections etc than from actual bullet wounds.

the difference being, they couldn't get the help when they got worse. I could. It just never got that bad that I couldn't eat or walk or anything. I just had waves of fever. My arm was really hot and red, but that didn't go past my forearm where the infection was. I guess my body was good at fighting it.

Cut it off. If you're going to ask Dr ATOT for medical advice, you should post pics regardless of gross factor. Remember the guy who has a foot-long open wound? He posted pics.

link?

I mean really without seeing it it is anyones guess as to what it is, it sounds rather serious though, I mean if your body is working so hard to fight / heal a wound something is definately in there, being it a virus, bacteria, or other substance such as a venom, there is something wrong and you'd get better faster treated, if not prevent further injury.

chicken pox does. That's what I meant.
seriously, I want some of whatever you're on.

The only thing that's going to alter your DNA is a massive radiation exposure, and you won't live long enough to discuss it much either.

Yes. Were it not for a hospital, I'd have died when I was a little kid. I had some intestinal infection, and I couldn't keep down anything. Even water made me throw up. It was in the late afternoon when my parents called the pediatrician. They wanted to know how serious it was based on the symptoms, and if a doctor appointment could wait until the next day. The pediatrician said that I could die of dehydration before then. I was taken to the hospital pretty quickly then. They got me on an IV then. I don't remember how long I was there then, a few days maybe.

Yes, stuff like this kills people. Plenty of people die of infections treatable by a simple antibiotic: penicillin. Why? They don't have access to it. People die of things that are minor nuisances in this country, or things that we don't even think about. This is one of those things. But just because we're in a healthy country doesn't mean that we don't need to seek professional medical help on occasion.

That old saying, "what you don't know can't kill you," - total BS. What you don't know can kill you even easier than what you do know.

Are you a doctor? Do you know when it gets "too bad"? Maybe when you judge it to be bad enough, you get to the doctor and are told, "This would have been easy to take care of if you'd come in 5 days ago. Then I'd have prescribed an antibiotic. Now you're going to need surgery."

I've read in some articles (one was in Scientific American) that little snippets of bacterial DNA (or is it just RNA?) are embedded within our DNA.

Lets just say it was on another part of your body..... say, on your 'privates'..... would you see a doctor then??

If you would see a doctor in that case, you should see a doctor in this case. I'm not saying that these parts have the same value (not even close, imo), but that where it is shouldn't matter as much as what it is. If you don't know what it is, see a doctor

Glad to hear you are getting better though. But you can forget coming over for dinner!

Glad to hear you seem to be getting better, but you need to seriously consider that these recurring symptoms might not be caused by anything topical & relatively minor like an insect bite or small skin infection, but rather could indicate that you have some type of serious medical condition only a doctor will be able to diagnose.

I'm not suggesting that you rush to the ER or anything at this point, but if it were me I'd certainly be making an appointment with my doctor to find out what, if anything is wrong ... everyone here is correct in telling you that MANY conditions that are easily treated if caught early can do serious damage to your body if symptoms are ignored.

Toughing it out is ok for a day or two, but sick for a week twice in a year means that it is time to see the doc.

Lemme get this straight, you pulled white sacks out your arm and don't want to see a doctor?

I would have to say the alien organism has already taken control of your brain.

The OP is obviously a MORON who is too stupifyingly brain dead to know when to seek medical treatment from a trained professional.

Not true actually. Viruses replicate by "hijacking" the host cell and using its "machinery" to replicate the viral DNA. It many cases it does this until the host cell fills up with so many copies of the virus that it explodes like a balloon.

In some cases the virus literally inserts its own DNA into the host cell DNA and does not kill the cell. Link Then, everytime the cell replicates the viral DNA lives on. There is even research using these types of viruses to kill tumor cells link .

Basically, viruses do mess with your DNA and even have the potential to cause (and perhaps treat) cancer.

Oh, and I dont believe the OP. Stuff like this SHOULD be treated with antiobiotics quickly if true. I watched someone very young die recently from a resistant staph infection that started from a splinter.

Why do past medical routines concern you? Stop being a tough guy and go see a doc.

Ah yes, I do recall now, a good example: human papillomavirus can cause cancer.
