Infinite Loop problems...or IRQ problems...please help

I can't understand what's up with this thing. I just did a fresh re-format of everything, installed all the basics (win 98 se, directx 8.1, 29.42 WHQL dets, basic drivers for hardware), and in any game I play I always get the infinite loop problem. The game just freezes, but the sound just keeps on going over and over. Sometimes the game won't even boot right. Im using an SB pci card w/ a via kt266a board (sb pci 16 w/ shuttle ak35gtr). I don't understand if perhaps this is a driver issue, or perhaps it is an issue w/ the IRQ setup w/ my various hardware. I would try to change my IRQ's, but in all honesty I dont know how. If someone could show me this, I would appreciate it.

could you post your full irq listings for anything glaringly obvious?

Heres how to view them.

Right click on my computer
click on properties
click on the tab that says device manager
select the that says computer by clicking it once.
click the properties button at the bottom.

Now you should have a window with everything you need.

The infinite loop on sound is no big deal. Lots of games that use midi cause the midi to go into a loop when the game crashes. What game are you trying to play? What sound card do you have? Reformats aren't going to help in such a situation. Try a different game and see if it also crashes. Go to the game's homepage and see if there is a patch available.

there was a write up on 2cpu.com that listed the best video drivers to avoid the infinate loop problem

if memory serves me correctly the problem is most pronounced using sb sound and athlons with certain
video drivers and if all three are present then you are more likely to get the infinate loop but they also stated all three were the cause and by removing any one of the three variables you eliminate the infinate loop problem

so i'd recommend try different drivers first

if after trying all the drivers and you still have problems remove the sound card and drivers
if that fixes it try a different sound card

Cool i'll try that out. I think it might be me using the nvidia/athlon/sb combo is what's causing it. I'll try to see what I can do. I'll keep you guys posted
