If you're not running external amps, Infinity Kappas I think are the best speakers you can buy. They come with crossovers which do make a huge difference in the bass you hear. Some people don't like the hard tweeters, would rather have silk, but the only speakers you can get with good silk tweeters require external amps.

Like a HT setup, you have to go out and listen to each option yourself. There are other factors like staging, the types of music you listen too, the type of feed, and the other peices of your car audio that will compliment your set of components. Listen to some MB Quarts as well.

The infinity's were too bright for my taste.. I went with the Polk MMC6500 and couldn't be happier. Much warmer sound IMO.

Polk Audio FTW, their new component's are untouchable, they are pricey but much cheaper then the high end MB Quarts, Focal, and Diamond stuff. I currently have the older Momo Components in my car. They are amazing for the price, you can get them on Ebay for 160'ish, you won't find a better setup for less. If you can afford to and want to spend the cash, the new Polk's blow everything else car related out of the water, and can even stand up against some good home speakers. they're around $450 on Ebay, and sound better then speakers 2-3x the price.

Thats quite the statement. I would have to go with Seas lotus over Polk. The majority of the speakers made in Europe destroy Polks easily. I cant recall the last time I saw the winner at a legit competition with polk components.

My buddy was sponsored by Polk a few years ago and I was not impressed. Maybe things have improved with them.

In my integra:
Focal polykevlar k2 6.5 components powered by PPI 2x100 amp
Eclipse 8443 deck with 8v preouts
2 IDMAX 12"subs in a 2.5 c powered by 2 jbl 1200.1 mono amps
130 sq foot of RAAMMAT (think dynamat, but better)

The Focals really sang, they blew my infity kappas and boston acoustics away

Sweet setup... I hade the Eclipse 8053 and it rocked.

I just have a 50x4 Alpine head unit. Nothing fancy.

I just want a basic audio setup. With nice sounding speakers. I'd like more bass, but I would get sick of it after a while.

I love this mag, they are very hard on speakers when it comes to scoring, the highest I've ever seen on any speaker was 81 which went to the Polks. The Focal Utopias got, I believe a 77. My Momo's are good, there are much better (tho for the price I'd argue that...) but I can honestly say I heard the sr6500 in a proper setup, and nothing touches them, the Focal-BE's come close but at what price? 4,000 retail, $2,900 ebay.

you can get the Polks for 899 retail, 500 ebay. And I honestly think they sound as good, and for the price difference you can throw in a uber amp and you will die happy.

I hang out at car stereo shops, I'm a junky for car audio. I've always liked Polk, but the sr6500's put them in an untouchable category. Until Focal or any other "high end" car audio company releases something as good for the price, Polk will be the king.

You can argue the BE's are better sounding, but $899 vs $4,000? please it's no contest.

I think I read that article before. Is that the one where they confuse the $39 Vifa XT19 series Ring Radiator tweeter with the $400 ScanSpeak R2904 Ring Radiator tweeter from the Krell LAT-1?

When they start winning more IASCA SQ comps I will be impressed. I dont trust magazines reviews anymore.

Polk may be king to you which is fine and I respect your opinion. Until they can take as many trophies as DLS, Dynaudio, etc. I can't say they are the best.

Then again I feel there is no best. It will always be up to the judge's ear.

they never said anything outside of the tweeter is Vifa, no model number or anything. Don't think anyone would confuse a $400 tweeter being in a set where the total price is only $100 over what 2 tweeters alone would cost. Regardless, the 6500's are by far the best components I've ever heard. My previous favorites were the BE's, Boston Z6 & Diamond *can't recall the model*

Bottom line @ $900 the Polks easily sound as good as sets costing 3x as much. Many would argue they even sound better. And 35 or 400 dollar model, this is the cleanest sounding tweeter I've come across.

They don't win comps because they really don't make amps, I mean they have 3 amps, and while all three are good, none of them are really powerful enough to do any damage. Don't think you'd see a Polk sponsered car with a Macintosh amp (or any other amp)
Correct me if I'm wrong but you won't get sponsored by Kicker, unless you run a 100% kicker setup right? Head Unit excluded of course. I really don't follow the comp scene.

If Polk released newer, bigger amps and entered contests with the 6500's they would win. It's really a shame they never came out with a 2nd generation of amps (I know they technically didn't make the 1st gens themselves)

I agree with you, they're great. I almost purchased some sets. They do, however, say they're the tweeters used in a $35,000 home theater setup. Close, but not correct.

If you really like those tweeters, and I do, the Alpine SPX-177R is another great choice. It uses the same Vifa XT series tweeter. However, the kit (two 6.5", two very good crossovers, and two XT tweeters) costs $175.

Alpine SPX-177R

Alpine SPX-177R Ring Radiator tweeter

If you want to move up to the ScanSpeak R2904-70000, the Alpine F1 Status uses those, but at a higher cost.

You're pretty much only getting suggestions for speakers that require good external amps.

If you just want something simple, get the full range Kappas from Crutchfield and give them a week to break in. If you're not satisfied, Crutchfield will give you a full refund no questions asked. And you'll have a better idea of what kind of sound you want to get.

I have a full set-up of Kappa Perfects all the way around, and they are good sounding speakers but Jesus they are BRIGHT. Tuned them wayyy down right off the bat. Otherwise I've been impressed, obviously not focal or the new Polk, but they sound good and hey, the price was right

set up properly Infinity's are good ass speakers, I had Reference 5x7 in my Taurus running off an Alpine amp a few years ago and they sounded nice, the Kappa on a tuned amp will be very solid. They are also way cheaper then anything us audio snobs have suggested.
