I am thinking about this? How good is this monitor? is it 100% IPS?

I got got this today and it is a wonderfull monitor, is there a color profile that I could use or at least good setting.

According to a user on hardforums who calibrated the monitor, the colors still weren't that good. Apparently, the NEC 20WMGX2 has better colors out of the box than a calibrated Dell 2209WA. Black levels aren't very good at all, so overall it's still much better than a TN panel as response times are like a TN panel or better and low input lag.

guess its going to be hard to replace this NEC 20WMGX2 anytime soon.

WChang, that was an earlier post in the Hard|Forum thread, and the information was based on what the punter had been told by a Dell rep (so... deploy your salt cellar liberally). The other evidence is what LG presented at CES, which we've all seen on DisplayBlog. That leaves us with...

A panel manufacturer showcasing a 'new' IPS technology (e-IPS) in larger formats at CES, perhaps to possible buyers (Dell, HP, etc). We've no updates on that. And a claim by a low-level sales employee about forthcoming products (I dunno about Dell, but if this were Apple, such folks would probably know less than rumour-obsessed geeks do).

Finally at some point the Hard|Forum discussed a Chinese analysis of the 2209WA, which revealed that, indeed, the panel is an LG.Philips (or should I say LG Display now) IPS, and that 'e-IPS' seems to be a sort of H-IPS. This led to speculation that the Dell 2209WA might be a 'bastard' model, at least in its IPS incarnation, just a way for LG to liquidate some excess IPS panels. The qualifier here is that, so far as I know, there aren't any other 22-inch IPS displays out there, so what would have provided the excess stock?

For the reasons above I got the impression that if e-IPS is in fact coming to 23-inch or larger displays, it probably wouldn't happen until late spring at earliest (though we're still only halfway through April). And there's a chance that the whole budget e-IPS wave might prove a false hope (2209WA as bastard), in which case the LCD game might not change this spring after all.

So I bought the Dell 2209WA for a little over $200. So far it's proven a very nice monitor indeed. :heart: Frankly, I was prepared to pay over $300 for a 22-inch IPS, and what I received is easily worth that much.

If I had not purchased the 2209WA, I wouldn't still be waiting for 23-inch e-IPS. I'd have bought the recent $530ish HP LP2475w deal or the $470ish DoubleSight 265W. I wouldn't consider a $400 (my expectation) 23-inch 1920x1080 budget IPS a much better deal than a $530ish 1920x1200 H-IPS. Though I think many presumed Dell discount madness would eventually drop the 23-inch towards $300.

Yes you do, its a great display for the money. Stands don't get any better than the one thats included and the 3 year warranty is icing on the cake. The small premium you pay over tn monitors is well spent.

Thanks for laying that out really nicely for me.

I actually called and asked a Dell sales rep about a possible 23" or 24" E-IPS from them, but the woman said that she didn't have any info about that, and that if she did, she wouldn't be able to share it, anyway. So, no light shed on it from that, and if anything, it clouds the issue of what the earlier Dell sales rep said a little more.

To be honest, I had forgotten I had posted that question to you (had drafted it up, but forgotten that I had actually submitted it). In the meantime, like you, I ordered the 2209WA -- to some extent, with the same reasoning that you used. I think, even if a 23" or 24" E-IPS comes out, I'll be happy with the 2209WA, and will have a use for it even if I do buy a 23" or 24" E-IPS down the road. I think it's a pretty good choice.

Is the 2209WA all black or is the neck of it silver? Some pictures I've seen show it as silver and others as black. I'm in the usa if that makes a difference....

I think you're mistaken...that sounds very low for max resolution. The three 8600GT listed @ Newegg all go to 2560 x 1600

No, the 8600GT goes to the full 2560x1600.
