Everybody will think ECS is a bad company because of problems with many motherboards.

I used to own ECS K7S5A. Great motherboard for its price. If ECS G10I can make it to the market below US$500, I think it's worth a look.

Looks like this will be a great year for the low-price (somewhat) sub-notebook category. I hope the 9" EEEPC and the others come out fairly soon so I can make an informed decision and get one of these things.

The ECS pictures have been out for a while now. I have not seen one with the laptop powered on. Apparently the MSI doesn't have any working model pictures either.

Until I see a laptop powered on and someone using/reviewing it, it's all just vaporware or a ploy to make you wait to buy theirs instead. Who knows how long you really have to wait..

Yeah, there doesn't seem to be a perfect all around model. While I would reaelly like to get something now, I think I'm just gonna end up waiting until summer and see how all these new models compare, and then make a choice then.

Reading some of the comments on the engadget and gizmodo articles on this HP, the Via CPU also seems to be a miss for HP.

more competition is always good. i'm more interested in the ones that will use the Intel Atom processor though. the performance of the via processors is pretty well documented by now, but little is known about how well the Atom does.

Atom 1.1GHz was about a bit faster than VIA C7. Some SuperPI runs also pointed out that Atom 1.6GHz is slower than the Cel M 900MHz in Eee PC (what?).
Here are some links for your convenience:
http://laptoping.com/intel-atom-benchmark.html
http://www.engadget.com/2008/0...h-besting-intels-atom/

I'm only interested in how much power Atom 1.6GHz consumes, as well as how much the system is going to cost at this point. Another point is how the final VIA C8 processor stack up... performance and power consumption-wise, that is.

Its not an Eee killer, when it has a 10" lcd. The main point of a Eee, is how small and light it is. Its an ultra portable. A 10" is not, to me. And they're too late to the party, the Eee has been out for half a year.

10" is definitely ultraportable to me
im still a little on the fence about getting a 9/10" machine at those prices. id want a 17" LCD at least to go with it, and i wont be able to afford one.

*maybe* ill relent and get a 7", i doubt it. the resolution would be a pain in the ass when i was using it away from an LCD

8.9" MSI was announced today for $399. That's gonna be an EEE Killer for $150 less.

the XP version is supposed to be $549 or something. however, with the Atom and a 6 cell battery, im interested. i dont expect 5.5 hours, but if it can get 4, ill gladly replace my thinkpad and hook it up to a flat panel at home.

im iffy on using a SATA drive instead of SSD. id kinda prefer a smaller SSD drive but *shrug*, whatever. looks nifty

edit: come to think of it, perhaps Asus will do something similar: XP, 6 cells, but SSD. i usually prefer linux, but with school, i pretty much need windows i could dual-boot on the 80gb though.

Well, if it had a 10" LCD, but was as small, light and had as good battery life as an Eee PC, then why not? The Eee PC has a lot of unused space around the screen.

However, looks like the MSI at least will weigh more, so bleh! On the flipside, it will use standard notebook 2.5" SATA drives, so if you want something small, light and cheap but can have a huge amount of HDD space, then the Wind may be a good choice.

With a 1st-gen EEE now, I am really happy with it, but now I am running into major issues with HD space. I have 8GB total, but with the Garmin maps, Garmin Topo (for hiking) and other programs I'm having to uninstall/reinstall things all the time to have enough room.

The MSI looks mighty tempting though, though the price increase for XP doesn't seem justified - you can buy a small bluetooth adapter for $30, and the battery is the only thing it has going for it (that is, if you have XP already).

bluetooth, bigger battery, double ram, XP license.

so, $30, $???, $25, $100....to buy it all separately. unfortunately i kinda need xp now. maybe when the Wind, the Eee and a Dell come out the prices will edge down, but id still consider it at this price before the current Eee 900 model.

edit: dailytechs front page shows Asus has leaked the next Eee 900 revision will have an Atom and a 8.9" LCD. not really any details. meh.

For the Eee PC, the only way to get around storage space is to get a 16GB SD card, or one of those portable HDDs with capacity of 160GB or more. They go for around $100 each. And I don't even think the battery advantage of MSI Wind is that much compared to an Eee PC. Atom is simply an even ore undervolted Celeron M with a different frequency rating.
