It is pretty sad to see someone so upset about a delay in a product that they are getting for free. I think that perhaps you better take a deep breath and calm down there.

If, like us, you're still awaiting your $50 EMusic Nomad II, here's what EMusic told us today (7/17/00):

"Creative Labs has now informed us that we should expect the remaining shipment of Nomad II players on the 25th of July.

Our fulfillment center will then begin shipping the players out immediately."

Looks like another week's wait. (BTW, our confirmation came on 5/26.)

Well, my Nomad II finally showed up today. I quickly discovered that the VOLUME DOWN button on the player is broken - it does not decrease the volume, and sticks in if pressed too hard. Fortunately, the volume on the remote works. I wrote to them and described the problem; time to find out what kind of support they offer for these promo freebies!

Crap, I seem to have misplaced my install disc, and I uninstalled the program to troubleshoot some problems I was having. Does anyone on a fast connection have the installation file for the Nomad Manager? Nomadworld only has the update and not the full install. I can't switch out mp3s without it. ;_;

If you can help please let me know.

THANKS for the heads-up, dwell. I was a bit skeptical when I read on the nomadworld page that wma "provides unsurpassed audio quality, with CD-quality sound in half the size of an MP3 file". Well, I listened to my first .wma file at 64kbps and it sounded pretty good, I must say.

And yes, it looks as if long (or at least longer) filenames are supported. I transferred a file and didn't get the truncated filename with the ~ tilde. It didn't display the entire filename because it couldn't fit on the display, but that's fine. It also seems as if wma files are uploadable.

yea, WMA is kinda cool. Is there a way to encode WMA through media player? I can't find it.
edit: found it, its the "copy music" button under the CD Audio tab. Is there a way to convert wavs? or is it only from audtio CDs?

Don't forget to reformat your SmartMedia when you flash to version 2.00 of the firmware. Long filename support needs a reformat. I think WMP 7.0 can rip, encode and transfer in one shot. Dunno for sure.

BTW, the 2.00 firmware adds some additional stuff, like resume. Anyone else see anything new?

Tran23, You can download the Windows Media Encoder 7 Beta and should be able to convert .wav and probably lots of other formats to .wma. Also as a replacement for the Manager, I think Sounic Foundry's Siren Xpress can do the same job...I know the Siren Jukebox 1.5a supports the Nomad II and it rips and encodes .wma & .mp3.

I've been playing with the 2.00 firmware and WMP7 a little today.

I encoded on CD to WMA from disc (128k, 44k both maxed for WMP7). WMP7 said it couldn't "copy" the movie digitally. So it did it via analog means. The resulting files were very low volume-wise as they could barely be heard a max volume on the Nomad ][ and on my computer.

I tried the same with WinAmp, but it would directly write from CD to WMA. But, it claims that it can encode WMAs to 160k, 48k.

The file transfer does work with WMP7, but you really need to create a new play list with the files you want to go on it. You just cannot pic and choose individual files ... as far as I could tell.
