A basic system comprises:

1. Motherboard and CPU. Motherboards are designed for either AMD or Intel processors.

Most newer motherboards include an onboard LAN (network adapter) and some include a basic sound card.

2. Case and power supply. You can buy a case and power combo. If you need more power than is typically available in a combo, you may want to buy a separate power supply with a higher rating.

3. RAM (memory).

4. Video card.

5. Hard drive.

6. Other peripherals, including any optical storage (CD or DVD, either as a reader or a burner), possibly a floppy drive, a sound card and any other plug-in devices you want.

I prefer to spec a good, stable basic system, then select peripherals as I need them (or can afford them). A strong system will probably run anything you throw at it, later. A compromised basic system will eventually let you down. Check the main AT site and the buying gudes, other computer sites and the forums for more info on which components of each type will best meet your needs.

Then, don't forget to check Hot Deals for the best prices on what you want.

This site has alot of info on building your own PC. Here is an article explaining what the different parts of a computer do, but it is very outdated (it's from the Pentium II era). This site has a list of the different parts you need to build a PC, with links to detailed descriptions of what to look for in each part. However, since all articles are at least a little out of date, your best bet is to rely on sites like AnandTech for the most up to date information.
