You guys have steered me right on every one of my vacations so far from Dallas, Baltimore, and DC.

I heading up to Memphis next month and wanted to know where to stay (Beale vs Cooper Young) and what to do while I am there.

Any ideas? I did a quick search on Memphis but did not find a previous thread. If I missed it point me to it and I will try and delete this thread.

Thank you in advance

I am worried about getting robbed. Seriously....

I am going there for fun with an old flame from DC. I am sure there will be plenty of bar b que eaten. Any great places? I know tripadvisor has a list but I have been steered wrong so often by them.

Def partying will be involved. We do want to see the sites though.

My favorite place is Central BBQ, which (if its still open) is on Central Avenue near cooper young. I moved from Memphis in 2005 and I've not been back since so I'm not sure of everything that has changed.

The most famous BBQ place there is Rendezvous which is downtown.

I would stay at a hotel on Goodman Rd. Southaven, MS. 10-15 minutes from Beale, Graceland, airport. Downtown parking @ Parking Can Be Fun Garage. Union Ave, just a couple blocks west of the Peabody Hotel, only charges $5 a day anytime and all the time.

Central BBQ has three locations now, and it is quite tasty. As far as where to stay - if your plans include a lot of nightlife in the Beale St. area, I would look at the Madison Hotel pending your budget for this stay. It is on the trolley line, and within easy walking distance of many of the Beale St. area attractions. Barring that, there is the Peabody and a Hampton Inn in the area. The Beale area is typically heavily patrolled by MPD as it is a major tourist draw/revenue stream for the city so they tend to want to keep it safe.

There are plenty of things to do depending on what interests you. The Memphis Zoo is pretty nice, Pink Palace Museum, Graceland, catch a ballgame at Autozone Park, some good live music venues, plenty of good BBQ (and other food), casinos aren't far away if that is your thing, Civil Rights Museum, etc.

Memphis aint the nicest place. I'd personally avoid it, but they have good BBQ. I went to this small BBQ shack featured on Diners Dives and Drive ins. Forgot the name, but was good!

While you're in TN for the Armed Robbery 2013 tour, you might as well hit Chattanooga, too.

I was joking. But it is kind of a rough town. Or so I hear; I don't go there.

Same with Chattanooga.

Personally, I don't see the point of tourism in this state at all. Nashville probably has the most 'stuff,' and it still doesn't amount to anything I'd travel to see. It's fairly friendly/safe, though. Somewhere like Atlanta, by comparison, can be a hell of a shock.

Use some common sense and be aware of your surroundings and you should be fine in Memphis.
