well in a tube you have to realize that you are watching through glass so then image has more contrast/depth to color..as per viewing it on a screen. I currently have the X2 projector and it works great, placement in the room is critical as it cant be viewed clearly in direct sunlight. I am happy with my X2 but decided to get the 4800 series unit.

Do you mean 4800 or 4805? Isn't the 4800 simply the home video optimized version of the X1, which was going for $699 new just a couple months ago? I could see paying $799 refurbed for the 4805, but i'm not sure about this....

To my knowlege the X1 nor the 4800 have ever been sold for $699 new .... rebate or otherwise included.

Yes, Infocus did put out the 4800 as a more video friendly version of the X1 ... not as much tweaking is involved to get a really good viewing picture. They are however essentially the same unit.

$799 is not a bad price for the 4800 but not that great either (at least for a refurb). This is considering that the 4805 has now droped to the same price point as the 4800 new. Which is $1299 I believe. This should inturn bring the price down on the 4800 to around the $899 + level (I'm guessing) new.

A great place to learn about this kind of stuff is here link

I have learned and am still learning a great deal of info from that site.

Now if someone can point me in the direction of a really good deal on a screen

BH Video has good prices on Da-Lite screens. I got a 70" wide pulldown screen for less than $100 shipped.

90 day warranty isn't the greatest, considering the standard warranty is at least two years and maybe longer.

FWIW, Circuit City has the 4800 new for only $90 more. They're currently out of stock, though.

It's not a bad price for a DLP projector but the 800x600 resolution would keep me from biting.

CircuitCity cleared out new X1 at $700 couple months back which is virtually same as 4800.

800x600 is plenty for DVD. Remember DVD is only 720x480 in 16:9 format.

This deal is pretty pricy considering it's refurb and only has 90 day warranty.

Provided you haven't seen the projector in action I would have to say that you might just be supprised at just how good the 800 x 600 actually looks. I personally have the X1 and absolutely love it. Bare in mind though that I'm projecting on a makeshift wall screen, soon to be replaced by an actuall screen suited for this purpose.... so it can only look better:shocked: Though proper light control will probably still be needed.

I know that 800 x 600 is not HD, but many ppl have reported that this unit and its brother look simply amazing w/ HD content. I do not have HD so I can not say for myself.

The old X1 can be firmware changed to the 4800

Three thing have kept me from doing this
A) my current setting look pretty good( besides some say there is no improvement)
B) i do not wish to have to buy a new remote to regain all the features
C) been to lazy to try and find the firmware

Yeah, if you have already calibrated your X1 to your liking, don't bother. The X1 is a great projector, especially for the price.

Note this projector isn't HD, it's 4:3 native and is only 480P. I've got a Sanyo PLV-Z2, HD on it rocks (it's a 16:9 720P native projector).
