My friend was looking into projectors and basically, this is the cheapest one available and has surprisingly good reviews.

They just dropped the price on this sucker and still have the $100 rebate on it. Details were also posted on other bargain site. I was also sent a 10% off coupon in the mail which may be applicable, dropping the price to $799 after rebate. Have not tried it yet however.

***************

BestBuy.com has the Infocus X1 DLP Projector with Faroudja DCDi Deinterlacing for $899 after Rebate, shipped free. 1100 Lumens, SVGA 800x600 native, 2000:1 contrast ratio.

Free 5yr extended service plan when you register it by 6/30. $100 rebate Exp 5/31/03

That's a bomb diggity price especially with the Faroudja decoder. That thing makes a hell of a difference in picture quality.

Wiggity wiggity wiggty wack

I was looking at this when it first came out, and I saw a few days ago about the price drop. Then I saw the X1 in the bestbuy add, but did i even think to look at the price, NO. Sweet deal. I am trying to figure out how well this will display webpages. I know its great for movies and even gaming, just trying to find other uses to make me want to buy it more.

Friend went to go purchase today. Best Buy was out of stock and did not allow to sell without it being in stock. Is that weird? I would assume they'd want the sale, and would deliver upon receipt of more inventory.

Anyway, the 10% off coupon WILL work so this is a hot deal at $799 AR!! Pretty amazing stuff.. At least if you can get it. The warehouse is due to restock tomorrow.

Further uses for it? Movies, games, presentations, TV. I would not really recommend these for regular computing purposes because it takes a while to start up, they are fairly loud, and even tho you think it's cool to do work on a 100" screen, it actually gets kind of annoying. (Plus working in low light conditions isn't too good for your eyes).

Viper is right though. The price on my bulb itself retails for $500. Outright ridiculous considering a new projector is only $800! This deal is pretty dang flaming. BTW, the Best Buy coupon expires on May 26.

Test one out before you buy it.

After 5 minutes of viewing, the rainbows were driving me crazy. I could never watch a 2 hour movie on it.

well i got one from a local BB and used the coupon successfully. Its not going to work for my situation though so Ill see it for my cost to anyone interested. Ill provide the receipt for the $100 Infocus MIR. This was opened and tested for 1 hour then resealed so its brand new. UPC intact for your rebate as well. My total was ~$960 after tax with the 10% off. Figure around $980 shipped then you get your $100 back from infocus.

Let me know ASAP, if I dont hear by tomorrow its going back to BB: EMAIL

Actually, I have a different projector than the X1 thus making my bulb much more expensive. IMO, a bulb that lasts 3x longer and costs $200 less is a great steal, not to mention a higher brightness rating.

Just a forewarning to anyone who is considering purchasing this, some people are prone to seeing the rainbow effect, which is inherently caused by the technology (not a defect of the projector). You might want to check out some other DLP projectors and see if it is an issue for you.

my dad bought this last christmas for 1500...it kick ass and its well worth the price. But just use it for movies and maybe some console gaming. its not worth it for PC use since its max res is 800x600

I could not resist this deal. I went through Ebates and PC Connection which has free shipping. I'll get $10 back from Ebates and a $100 rebate because PC Connection is an "authorized dealer."

Part of my desire to purchase was I just started an event video business and I was pricing rental cost for projectors. They want $175 per day and higher for rental! A hotel will charge you $300 or more to rent this presentation stuff. So I figured as a sideline I could offer presentation of my completed DVDs. I might have one job lined up for $100, so maybe this projector will pay for itself.

But the real reason I wanted this was to watch DVD on a bigger screen. My 30" just doesn't cut it with letterbox DVD. Now I need a good portable screen. Any ideas where to find a resonable roll-up portable screen?

Bedsheets and duct tape, my friend. Bedsheets and duct tape.

In all seriousness I would actually say go to some thrift stores and look for projector screens for old slide machines. It's basically the same thing, just really, really old.

Check out the da lite screens on e-bay. There are some decent ones for $100 or so.

Mouting the screen is a bitch though, so bed sheets might be much easier. Or just finding a flat well (hopefully untextured).

Mine already shipped from PC Connection, even though their website says 2 to 3 days for shipping.

I feel better and better about this purchase after reading comments at the AVS forum. Most people think it is much better than rear projection TVs and other people don't even like to go to the real theater anymore. Others commented that video stores don't like to show the quality of these things because it keeps people from spending big bucks on plasma and rear projection HDTV. From what I have read, the video procession chip is top-of-the-line (Farouhda, or something like that) and it makes DVD and HDTV look pretty darn good. Plus it only weight 7 lbs!

While everyone is selling for around the same price, PC Connection is for sure an authorized dealer, so no question about the rebate, they shipped the same day and my Ebates account was credited $9.99 the next day, which is the fastest I ever got Ebates credit.

http://www.bhphotovideo.com This highly reputable camera store has fairly good prices on Da-Lite screens. They "drop ship" which means it ships direct from Da-Lite. Fed-Ex super save shipping is around $23, which is less than others charge. I got a 50" X 50" matte tripod screen for $67 with $23 shipping. I wanted bigger until I actually measured the space it would sit it. 50 inch is pretty wide (this isn't diagonal.) I decided to get matte after hearing some people complain about the glass beaded stuff, which was the same price.

To find at BH, just put "da-lite screen tripod" in the search box. Or skip the tripod.

I'm trying to build my own home theatre system and had purchased the Dell 3200 projector only to have it cancelled (that weekend with the triple stack coupons). Compared to the Infocus, the Dell has higher resolution and a higher lumens rating. What I want to know is how large the real world differences are. The resolution will be noticeable for computer use, but when it comes to movies it shouldn't really matter should it? Even with the Infocus, the FILM mode brings it down to 500 Lumens. Is this usually the case or is this done on the Infocus to gain better color and picture? So in essence, another pricier projector would be able to show a film at 1000 lumens fine and it would be a lot better than the 500 lumens from Infocus?

Are there any forums out there for home theatre buffs? I'd like to build my own system, price isn't really an issue but I'm the type that loves bargains.

This thing rocks for movies.

Since the resolution is only 800x600, it sucks as a monitor.

And with replacement bulbs costing $200+, I wouldn't use this to watch TV on a nightly basis either.

The X1 has a rated bulb life of 3000 hours. Shortly before 3000 hours have expired, the projector will flash a warning and after 2000 hours have passed, it won't power on

What exactly does this mean!?! If it won't power on after 2000 hours have elapsed, how can you say the bulb lasts a full 3000 hours? Do you have to leave it on constantly for the last 1000 hours?

By the way, concerning using the thing as a TV, that is the only thing I am buying it for (movies and TV). At an average viewing of 2 hours a day I estimate the thing will last over 4 years. 2 hours may not sound like a lot, but 14 hours a week DOES sound about right if you ask me (and 3 hours comes to 3 years). Anyway at that point worst case is I spend another ~$200 for another 4 years of tv that is better quality than anything else I know of. And that's assuming the price wont drop by then as these things become more popular. And sheesh, compare this price to a $X0,000 plasma!?!

After reading some of the posts over in the home theatre forum, I'm not too sure about purchasing this unit anymore. A lot of them complained about a rainbow effect (which some stated happens to all projectors, but others after reviewing different models side by side attribute the effect to the X1). As of now, I'd rather spend some more cash and get a better offering. However, though I don't really have a limit as of now for the home theatre system, I like to stick to my deals. I may purchase this just as a temporary projector, once I get everything set, I may purchase another one to use as a permanent projector and use the X1 as a travel projector. However, with the 800 x 600 resolution, it won't really fair well when linked with a computer for presentations. Really just wish I had gotten the Dell 3200MP.
