Cons: $500 minimum to avoid fees.

I checked out GMAC after an earlier post talked about their ATM/check-writing features. But apparently HSBC also gives you an ATM Card. From their FAQ:

"You can use your ATM card to deposit or withdraw your money at any participating ATM. Some stores will also let you pay for your purchases and receive cash back with your ATM card. Please refer to the ATM agreement that accompanied your card for more information."

"You can get an HSBC ATM card when you open your HSBCdirect Online Savings Account. It will be linked to your new account. Just select ATM card on the application. To request an HSBC ATM card after opening your HSBCdirect Online Savings Account, you can call us at 1-800-975-HSBC (4722) and we?ll be happy to help you get an ATM card."

------

I see that Emigrant Direct allows direct deposit (i.e. for my paychecks):

"How do I set up direct deposit?

You can set up direct deposits into your American Dream Savings Account by providing EmigrantDirect?s routing number (our routing number is 226070319) and your American Dream account number to the company that will be sending the funds to your American Dream Account."

^^^ Does HSBC allow this as well? I didn't see it on their site. It seems like the best bet for continuing to add money to the account (no 2-4 day delay while transfering it from your primary checking account).

Anyway, thanks for the advice.

Why go ING though, there are other banks that offer better interest rates?

I have been using ING since 2001 but recently moved all by assets to Emigrant due to higher rates. Although ING interface is much more friendly, I cannot justify the big rate difference.

I still use ING because their customer service is great, their interface is great, and they are very responsive. I'm willing to sacrifice the small interest difference for those things, and not having to speak to someone I can barely understand if I have a problem.

yes, interface and security keeps me there . . . but i've seen some 6 and 9 month CDs at over a point higher interest of late and I might jump ship for a bit.

the beauty of ing vs a CD is you can take out at any time without any penalties so i wouldn't be comparing the two. idk bout emigrant, but ing is pretty good with the no minimum balance requirement

Yea the one thing that is a slight nuisance is that now you have to download the money file from their website, you can't do an auto-update in MS Money.

How is HSBC about this? I have everything in Emigrant, but if there's a company that does the auto-update for MS Money I might jump just for that.

You get $10 if you sign up using this method. You can also get $10 extra if you have an ING referral to send.
