I have an i7 950 at stock settings with the intel stock cooler. My case is a coolermaster HAF 922 with 2x200mm intakes in the front and side, 1x120mm intake at the bottom and 3x120mm exhaust fans at the top and rear. It's a nice cool day and all my fans are going at max but the CPU is idling at around 50c (120f).
I was browsing these forums and someone else with a 950 was complaining about 70 degree load temps with prime95 after HOURS of testing.. My CPU reaches 95c (200f) after only 2 minutes! Even wierder, it only takes half that time to go back to idle temps again!?
I have pulled the heatsink off and re applied some Arctic Silver 5, this time I only used a thin strip running parrallel to the cores and i've double checked the cooler is definately attached properly and securely to the motherboard. I am even running my RAM below stock frequency and the cpu is at 1.2 vcore.
If I didnt stop the testing I believe the chip would hit 100c and throttle.
Should I re-seat the cooler again? Should I re-install the CPU itself even tho the system is running stable? Can temps this high cause damage, even over a short period of time? I am going to be installing a hyper 212 plus as soon as I can find the proper mounting bracket for it, but with temps this high perhaps there is something wrong with my processor.. I definately wont be able to do even a mild overclock to 3.3ghz even with the hyper 212.
