I'll weigh in on this one. I actually agree that the parents are doing this child a disservice by allowing him/her to lead a transsexual lifestyle, while in school, at this age. I have no ill will whatsoever toward transsexuals. I'm in favor of LGBT rights across the board without reservation. But parents have to protect their children from abuse by peers. It's their responsibility to limit the child's choices in order to protect the child. Otherwise, the logic goes that the 5 year old can play in the street with cars whizzing by at high speed just because he wants to. You simply can't give a 5 year old that kind of autonomy.
When this child is an adult, he can make his own choices. However, at this age, I believe the parents do have a responsibility to protect the child from the consequences of his own decision. He isn't old enough to understand those consequences. If he wants to dress like a girl, maybe let him do it at home. Certainly not at school.
