I have a grave problem. It happens that whenever I access my CDROM Drive my computer reboots. I had checked CDROM on another system it is working fine. Also I had checked Power Supply, Data Cable and jumper setting of my CDROM. All are absolutely fine. I could not understand were the problem is.

Firstly I was using Windows 98, then when I got the problem I formatted my C:\ Drive and loaded the windows 2000 Server but the problem remains same. ie. In 8 out of 10 times System Reboots when CD is inserted in CD Drive and it starts to rotate. I also tried to boot my system with Windows 98 boot disk (With CD Rom Drive) but the problem remains the same. System booted on accessing CDROM. The Specifications are: P III (550 MHZ), 128 MB RAM, Mercury i810 DST Motherboard and Samsung 52X CD R/RW. Plz help me as soon as possible. I personally think that the problem is related to Hardware conflict or some Device drivers , but could not make sure were the problem is.

Hmm, well personally I'd switch the ribbon on the motherboard and put it on a different controller. If it's on IDE1 then switch it to IDE2 and see how that goes, possibly there is a controller issue.

have u checked the jumper setting on your cdrom? U know at the back of cdrom u just put a little jumper to set your cdrom into
'slave', 'master', 'cable select'.

if u have say 2 cdrom both on master and on same ide cable, im pretty sure your computer will have problems. Or a hard disk on master and cdrom on master on same cable...

If your jumper setting is correct, maybe try a different ide cable, since your comp is old. Or if your cdrom is connected to primary ide slot, change to secondary ide slot.

Your computer is like 5-6 years old right? Was this problem recent and it was working fine before?

My guess.

Insufficient power supply, bad drivers, or problem in the Bios settings. Some PCI settings can do that, can't remember the exact one but it was a PCI 2.1 requirement. Maybe it was Delayed Transactions...

could it be a power draw issue? You could try removing the ribbon cable but keeping the power cable connected... put the CD in the drive and see if it still reboots the system. If so, it's rebooting when the motor spins up and it could be a power related issue... just a thought.

Ya , I had checked the Jumper settings of my CD ROM also. It is present at primary Slave and Hard Disk is primary master. they are attached to IDE 1. Also I had changed them to IDE 2. Also I tried connecting my CD ROM and HardDisk to separate IDE cables and slot. But the problem remains were it was. Plz help me. I am in urgent need. My computer was working fine a week back. This problem had erupted recently. Can it be virus problem . But then I had formatted my "C" drive. Help me.......

Agree with Gatt. Sounds like you need a bigger power supply. How many watts is yours?

Also - check your settings and turn off AUTORUN. Doesn't sound like a viral situation.
