Greetings, all! The garbage disposal in my kitchen sink is dying, so I had to price a replacement. It's not leaking, but it's vibrating some and trips its built-in circuit breaker if I let it run for a few seconds. The old unit is an "InSinkErator Badger 5" that I installed 7+ years ago, and that model is still manufactured, so I decided to price the same unit (ease of installation, long life). $100 + tax at Home Depot and Lowes, or $80.71 shipped at Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00004U9JO

It is a 1/2 horsepower unit with a 2 year warranty.

I'm an Amazon Prime member so my shipping was automatically 2-day (I ordered yesterday and it will be delivered tomorrow), so that delay wasn't a deal killer. I would probably have purchased local if the old disposal was leaking, though.

Vibration sounds like something is out of balance, maybe one of the whackers has broken loose.

Taking a disposal apart can be educational, its actually extremely simple mechanism.

Going with the same unit makes install a breeze, good luck on achieving NO LEAKS.

I've installed lots of ISE units and they seem to just fall apart. The last one I did was a waste king for similar money, much better warranty and specs. It looked great and so far is working well. Time will tell but if my other sink goes out I'm using a waste king or anything but an ISE.

why not just put a screen on the sink and not stuff garbage down your drain? hmmmm i used to be all for stuffing eggs and everything else down.. now i just use screens on both sides! (but my garbage disposal does work)

This, I had an insinkerator die after some dirt fell into it. I know this is bad for any disposal, I picked up a Waste King replacement. Easy to install, seems more powerful and I'm pretty sure they are made in the US.

I bought a Waste King from Amazon three years ago. Five year warranty and more power for less $$$. It has been working like a champ.

Switch brands and you need to redo the under sink attachment instead of popping in a replacement of the same brand that fits the old sink adapter.

This is what I did, I think I got the 1 hp model, I don't really remember having to change much under the sink, mostly just the ring that holds it to the sink.

Awesome. I need one of these. The disposal in my shower just burned up last week.

Disposal....shower....What? Please explain...

Is it like the Seinfeld episode where Kramer washed the vegetables in the shower while he was showering to save time and water.

I didn't get it either, so I looked it up. Yes, it is a Seinfeld reference. Kramer installed a garbage disposal in his shower.

I don't know how serious he was, but I found a post from some guy wanting to install a disposal in his shower so that he could remove the toilet from his bathroom. Would even save on toilet paper, he said. Ew.

This is the model I've been using for a while. I had one go bad, and was able to just snap a new one in place. Mine went bad due to a plastic cup falling in and jamming the blades. I tried to fix it, but no luck. The problem is the rubber opening is far too large and large items can fall through. So after I replaced it, I bought a new splash guard with a much smaller opening, something like this:

http://www.homedepot.com/p/DANCO-Garbage-Disposal-Splash-Guard-9D00010428/202669622

It went over the top of the existing gaurd, so I didn't have to remove anything to install it, and it helps prevent unwanted items from falling in.

I put all the kitchen waste my yardwaste cart, its the simpler route.

We had a disposal but during the remodel 10 years ago I could not remember the last time we had used it, so it did not make the cut.
