Been having trouble falling asleep last few weeks (hence lurking on ATOT at 12:30 am).Anybody else experience it? Is it worth going to the doctor over it?

Start eating better, take a time release multi vitamin and more importantly eat right and try to stop eating before 8 PM so you aren't digesting while you sleep.

Agreed, it sucks. I've tried AmbianCR and it seems to work pretty well without any noticeable after effects.

Thanks to both of you - will try both suggestions. Is AmbianCR OTC or prescription?

Prescription. Melatonin is OTC though. I've had a bit of success with it. It's with all the vitamins at most pharmacies. Basically, it's what your brain puts out to regulate sleep in pill form.

I usually can't sleep on Sunday nights because I'm too busy thinking about the work week ahead. To help this I've been taking Alprazolam.

Even worse, I slept from midnight to 3:30 with shit to do still. Now instead of either going back to bed or doing said shit I'm neffing.

For occasional sleeplessness this is prolly the way to go. Talk to Fullmetal Chocobo if you want to know what real insomnia is!

EXCERCISE!

Run a couple miles, take a hot shower, eat a healthy dinner and tell me if that doens't knock you out snoring into a full night's rest minus all the stupid drugs.

yes. i experienced it when i didn't have a job. you need to do something that saps the energy out of you, or makes you extremely drowsy/sleepy.

Agreed, I have chronic anxiety-related insomnia. Ambien CR knocks me out and I sleep for 8 hours without waking up.

What do you do if you do exercise, don't eat before bed, but just like being up at night? Also, I find my biggest problem, once I've coaxed myself to bed, is i think ALOT. The only time I don't have trouble getting to sleep is when my girlfriend sleeps here. Its getting really frustrating, and i feel drained.

That's pretty much what happens to me. I've always had trouble falling asleep - it usually takes me anywhere from 30 to 40 minutes to fall asleep. It's just that the last few weeks it's gotten much worse, on one occasion I couldn't fall asleep until 6am.

I'm toying with the idea of a prescription, but I'm kind of afraid if I do I won't be able to fall asleep without them ever again.

I work from 9AM - 8PM in my office and don't get a break for dinner (by the time I get home and am ready to make dinner it's around 9). So much for that idea

As I've gotten older it's gotten easier to fall asleep earlier. In college I'd stay up until 2-3AM every night no matter how early I had to wake up. I just couldn't fall asleep before 2AM. If allowed to oversleep, I'd easily sleep 9-10 hours (sometimes longer). I think I was making up for a sleep debt I had accumulated in high school, when I practically never slept at all.

Now I'm in grad school and able to fall asleep around midnight-12:30AM pretty consistently. I'm also working a lot harder (studying a lot more now than ever before), so that may have something to do with it. Sometimes I'll be reading and doing homework for a full 9AM-11PM today with hour breaks for lunch and dinner. This first year of grad school has been absolutely insane, and I've loved every minute of it.

I've been prescribed Ambien and Sonata in the past, and am currently on AmbienCR. Ambien would knock me out for longer periods of time (~8 hours), which would be a problem since if I only had 5 or 6 hours to sleep, I'd be borderline dysfunctional for a couple hours after waking up. Sonata wouldn't knock me out as well, not for as long (~4 hours) and was another decent option to have. I'm not liking AmbienCR much thus far. Since it's time released, I don't get the initial rush that KO's me. It takes much longer to fall asleep initially.

However, insomnia varies a hell of a lot, so your mileage might vary.
