1. I tried it in my main office (one with large windows) - the screen reflection is certainly too much. Even at home in my study, with the window in front of me, but no light source behind me, I can clearly see myself in the screen through whatever I'm working on.

2. The battery life is abysmal (could be a dud) - lasts about 1 hour. I recharged it overnight and still got only about an hour (NOT watching DVDs but 10 min using a data CD and the balance using Word and Excel. Subsequent overnight recharges have not improved battery life. I now have the 9-cell installed and charging overnight - we'll see how it goes.
What a quandry I'm in - love the clarity, but unworkable glaring screen, poor battery life.

I may have to return this reasonably priced fast machine for a slower IBM or HP notebook.
C'est la Vie.

From a few customers that i've talked with who have the 9300, they love the regular WXGA+ screen (non-true life) apparently it has none of these issues. you could always downgrade to it

Also, Your battery is definitely a dud. call up tech support and get it replaced now, remember they only have a one year warranty.

About battery life:
I have following configuration:
1.6 GHz P4
17" Truelife WUXGA
Geforce 6800 Go
512Mb DDR533
60gb 720rpm
DVD/CD-RW
Dell a/b/g NIC
Bluetooth module
Battery 1: 53Whr should be gettinf 3+ hrs, only get 1:30 hr from it with light use(browsing, MPEG4)
Battery 2: 80Whr should be getting 5+ hrs, only get about 2:30 hr from it with same use as above
Are advertised estimates VERY OPTIMISTIC, or are both my batteries duds and need to be replaced?
What could be killing battery life so fast, I know bluetooth consumes virtually no power, hard to believe it's the network card...
the hard drive maybe?

there's no way you should be expecting 5+ hours out of your 80Whr battery when you've got the 6800 card. Maybe if you had the radeon x300, but only then.

Pretty much anything that has decent 3d graphics for gaming will have a max battery life of around 2 hours.

I was just curious, thank you for explanation, Ethan. I'd rather have fast graphics then long battery life anyway. This machine is awesome, I think I got 3 of my friends hooked already, they are waiting for tax refunds to make a purchase

This is pretty hot.

there are some threads on www.notebookforums.com reporting that Dell/EPP is giving 40% off the XPS-2 right now (with coupon).

If you thought he XPS-2 was out of your price range and you are student, now may be your chance...

First impressions, Wow. I am very happy so far with the purchase, everything is pretty snappy and that is with all the Dell stuff still installed, I plan on reformatting and installing Xp Pro. I may even do away with my desktop setup I now have upstairs or turn it into a server of sorts and bring my 2005FP down and hook into the DVI.
Have not tried any gaming yet but from what I have heard it should be no problem.
My little one has been watching the incredibles on it and it looks and palys great.
