installation question for newbie

I am in the process of building my first computer...I have a Thermalright sk-6 and an amd 1500xp cpu. The directions from Thermalright say to place the Gelvet pad on the bottom of the heatsink and install. Is this pad supposed sit on top of the small black square on the amd cpu? Do I use this in conjunction with thermal compound? Do you use one or the other? Is one better than the other? Clearing this up would greatly be appreciated and thanks.

do u mean the core(the chip sticking out in the middle?)

the pad generally sits on the heatsink, where the core is
as for thermal compounds.... i always use arctic silver II one of the best
use of themal compounds is (in my mind) highly recommended

Yes, the core. For the life of me I couldn't think of the term. That was the brand I was planning on using but do you use compound instead of the pad?

Hello,

If the Gelvet pad is the thermal compound included with the SK-6, then it should not be used with ASII or any other thermal compound. Mixing thermal compounds is a very bad idea. One or the other should be used, but definitely not both.
