This was my first big upgrade. I had high hopes for the 7800GT as I heard EVERYONE talking about it. I installed and put in my new PSU. Everything works great and surprisingly quiet as far as I am concerned. Everyone talks about how loud it is but I just don't hear it. I am running all of my games on a Gateway 21" widescreen. Anyways, I tried out Doom 3. I wasn't really impressed with it. When I play it gets a sort of glitch in the screen as I move around from side to side. It might be because the screen is stretching it but it just didn't do it for me. Then I installed FarCry. I put all setting on Very High just to see what would happen. It blew my socks off!!! I couldn't believe the clarity on a 21" widescreen. Do you think the difference is the game or my monitor? At what temp should I start to worry on the 7800GT? When playing FarCry in very high mode it got to 58 degrees. Also, does anyone know how to make a WS go to 4x3? I am even unsure if the Gateway can even go to 4x3. I installed the 7800GT with the drivers they gave me I assume that I should update these? Also, my XP keeps recognizing new hardware everytime I restart and it wants to install automatically so how do I stop this?

Doom3 glitch? What glitch?

Did you modify the Doom3 config so that you were playing at your native resolution (along with increasing your FOV to about 105)?

I will have to check the settings and update the drivers. The card was just made in November 05, or so the box stated.

Yeah I wouldnt use the drivers off the driver CD. IN fact, I dont think I have ever used the shipping drivers.

The modded drivers are supposed to be the best.

Got tired of experimenting with DNA and Omega's long ago. So, I stick with WHQLs from now on.

If you want to do 4:3 aspect on your widescreen you need to select the option to not have the video card scale the output to fullscreen (it's in the NVIDIA control panel). Then just select a 4:3 aspect ratio resolution. Your games will display at the resolution that you specify with black bars around the image to compensate for the size.

As far as the issues you are talking about... Run Windows update and get the latest WHQL drivers from NVIDIA for your video card (try stock first instead of modded drivers). Make sure that you also have the latest drivers for your other hardware, especially your chipset. Last but not least, make sure you have the latest Doom3 patch. Doom3 went gold way before the 7-series ever came out, so if id made any tweaks to the game to make it perform optimally on the 7-series they won't be on the CD. This goes for FarCry too... make sure you have the latest FarCry patch to get the best performance.

Good luck with that... Also, if your issues continue, let us know what is going on and make sure to include the full specs of your system.

Thanks all for the information. It looks like I got some work to do. So I should uninstall the video card and download one that is suggested. Where do I download this from as it sounds like you guys are not downloading from the mfgr site itself. What is WHQL? I am fairly new at this so the jumble of letters don't mean much to me. I will check out the widescreen gaming forum in the meantime. Thanks.

I went to guru3d but how do I know what one I need to download? I see the NVIDIA Forceware, is this what I want?

58C is a totally safe temperature. Depending on your room temperature, it will fluctuate more than 5C, but you only need to worry if it starts shooting up to high 60s or into the 70s. Up to that point, just use the artifact testing to see if it's stable.
