I've seen this happen before on Windows XP machines, and now a with a PC with fresh install of Windows 7 it's happening.

I just downloaded an MMO game and installed it on this Dell Optiplex 755 Win7 PC. After installing it, the game patches to the newest versoin. Then when I launch it, the egg-time spins for a few seconds and then nothing. The screen is same as before, just the desktop.

If I open up task manager and look at processes, I can see the program is running.

I have installed the latest Radeon video drivers on the PC.

Any ideas on whey the game won't run? I've seen it before but not recently, click on icon for something and then nothing happens. Idea and thoughts?

Does you PC meet the requirements for that software to run? If so then you would also want to check or update your DirectX drivers.

It could be Direct X or the fact it might be installed into the programs folder where editing files in there is hampered by the OS especially after patching. I would reinstall to C: and see what happens after patching.

The PC certainly seems to meet the requirements. The game being installed first came out in 2004 and with minium requirements ofPentium III with 512 mb and better 3D video cards of the 2003/2004 time frame. This PC is a Dell 755 Core 2 Duo 3 E6550 2.33ghz, 4 gb DDR2 and Radeon HD4350 512gb video card. Granted, not amazing but should be able to handle this older mmo well.

Update: When I got up this morning I saw the log-in screen for the game up on that PC, which we never got that far yesterday after downloading installing, uninstalling and re-installing twice. I'm not sure if Direct X was part of the driver download but I did update the Radeon HD drivers and the game didn't work after that re-install. I'll check and see what if appears to be the solution here.

Since I've seen this kind of thing in the past, I've wondered why a program would run but not display - processes showing game running but no visible sign. Something related to the 3D card, drivers, Direct X or along those lines seems like a possible cause though.
