Hey guys

I just put my 4850hd in last night and was having issues with it overheating. I read that I should install the Asus fan controller to adjust the fan speed and that fixed my overheating problem. I rebooted the computer and now my ethernet port says its "disconnected" and no cable is found. Am I having power issues with my PSU? It seems like when I reseat the video card the ethernet port comes back until I reboot. System specs below, psu is about 2-3 years old.

AMD 6000+
Asus M2N-E
Asus Radeon 4850HD
2 Gigs of G Skill Ram
Thermaltake 430w psu
X-fi extreme music sound card

Yeah, I'd look at new PSU with dual 12v rails. It appears this has only one. I have an Ultra 500W w/ dual rails ... Ultra is not exactly great but it works fine with my HD 4850 and my system is overclocked pretty good. Having a 12v rail you can dedicate to your video card is very important.

There are several good name brand PSUs out there in the 500W-600W range that would probably work well without costing too much.

I have that same power supply with a Phenom 9550 @ 2.75 and 8600GTS - to be honest i wouldnt put a more power hungry card on this PSU

I have a new Antec TrioPower 430W power supply that I got from Frys for $10 AR. Mine works flawlessly. Many people have older 400W PS'es and they're reporting good. I don't think 430W is lacking in power, but it could be that your PS is just going bad. I'd run to some retail store and buy one to test on your system. If it solves it, then you know it's the PS, then you can decide to keep what you bought or return to get some other one. If it doesn't solve it, then it ain't the PS.

Actually, multiple rails in general are a bad thing, as they are more susceptible to being overloaded by an uneven distribution of power than a single rail. However, many units labeled as having multiple rails really just have a single big rail internally.

I'll probably just run over to Microcenter and bite the bullet for this. It should be PLENTY ample right?

I am running a 500w OCZ like that one on a e7200 and 4850. Runs pretty stable with a little bit of room to overclock.

So the 600 will leave some room for some overclocking?

Probably, i am still new to overclocking but i believe i ran into a wall with 500w. Right now i am running at 3.2GHz and the card is at 690/1100. Seems like if i go above 3.2 i start to experience random crashes.

Well here is a good resource:

Multiple rails are more of a non-issue than being bad, but about everything out there has multiple 12v rails to safety distribute the current load.

Yes, it usually won't make a difference either way, but if all else is equal, a single rail is slightly preferable if only to cover those handful of odd load situations that can exist. There is no advantage to having the video card on its own dedicated rail, on the other hand.

That thermaltake is definitely not enough power. I had that same one in my pc below when i first upgraded and had lockups and crashing until i upgraded to an Antec Trio 550Watt. No problems since then!

Get the Corsair if it's available.

Yes. Specifically, Team Fortress 2 would crash, and I would lose USB. After this, I actually rebooted and found myself locked at 640x480. I really thought I had a defective card, until I read about the recommended 30A 12v line, and saw mine was only 14A.
