ok today i got my pentium 4 3.0 fsb800 chip...so i was putting the thermal compound on the copper base that meets the chip. i was spreading it over the coppersink that touches the chip instead of the chip itself....in the manual, it says to spread the compound on top of the chip, and i didnt realize this till after i installed the chip with the heatsink on it. now i was thinking it prolly doesnt matter because they pretty much were gonna lay on each other anyways...so am i paranoid?

Next time you order a new product,I suggest you read instruction befor installing, the idear is to get the paste over the cpu and putting it on the heatsink you guessing where center is,next to take off the heat sink you will see where the cpu was attached because the heat will make a shadow on the heatsink if it covered the cpu or not.

is this a retail chip? it sounds like you put too much compound though. the layer shouldnt be too thick.

Less is better. The idea of the compund is to fill in the small gaps between the processor an the HS, not to coat the proc. I would remove it, clean it, and reapply.

If it's the retail stuff it shuda came in a little syringe with a pre-measured amount of thermal compund in there. So it's impossible to overapply.

Also kinda hard to re-apply with only enough for one install !

On the copper heat sink with the compound they use now, taken the heat sink off is a pretty tricky thing because the new paste gets hard after afew weeks of use and when it,s cold.I would run the system afew min so maybe the paste will get softer and kindly tiwst the heatsink very gently a little L&R to make sure it,s not stuck to cpu.I pulled a cpu right out of the socket with the copper heatsink attached,I was lucky it didn't bend a pin or even the pin aray clamp plate under the socket,so be very carefull if you take off the heatsink.
If it is not running hot (use the probe to check temp)and it is around 31 C to 40 C at idle you should be ok.

BTW check out zalman.com for it,s new heatsink for the P4 it is big but it is easy to put on and very quite, but it is heavy and cost afew buck, but check it out.I took my retail copper heatsink off.A pain in the butt to take off if you haft to.Don't get me wrong the retail heatsink is fine, and does the job,but I like the looks of the zalman I get the chills just looking at it lol.

Yes, you are paranoid.
Whether you put it on one side or the other doesn't matter.
Leave it alone.
