Installing an AMD Opteron 165

I have an AMD Opteron 165 sitting on my desk and I need to know if I can just switch it with the AMD Athlon 64 3200+ in my current rig without reinstalling Windows or anything.

My Current Rig:

AMD Athlon 64 3200+ Winchester (OCed to 2700MHz)
G Skill 2GBHZ 2GB 3-4-4-8
XFX 7800GT
Seasonic S-12 650W
Seagate 7200.8 300GB SATA

Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi
Antec Solution SLK1650B Case

I?m 99% sure the answer to my question is yes, I just wanted to make sure before I did it.

I'm guessing the most you would need would be the latest bios to support dual core at least. I'm not sure if 939 opterons use special mobo's or anything though, I have never reaslly looked into them.

Nah your board is ready to go.

First, I downloaded the new AMD driver.

Uninstalled the old CPU driver (you might not have installed the official AMD driver, so you may not need to do this), and shut down the system.

Removed old chippery, installed new.

Started it up and installed the new driver.

Done.

Hmm? I was never even aware that there were drivers for Processors.

I checked AMD?s site but only found a driver for Linux.

There's a fix for dual-core CPUs that affects some games and other timing-sensitive programs (although I think that MS Update includes it now). The other "drivers" are for their power management features, and they have some display utilities (though CPUID works too).

Just flash the latest BIOS and clear the CMOS before booting up with the new processor. The CMOS clear isn't always necessary, but some boards store processor specific settings and won't boot until the CMOS is cleared.
