Installing CDROM?

I tried installing this CDROM by Creative into my friend's really old computer. I plugged it into the free IDE and tried booting the computer up, and it turned on but nothing happened. The harddrive wouldn't boot up or anything. Then I turned it off and unplugged the CDROM and turned it back on and it booted up fine. I have no idea why this is happening. Shouldn't it boot up? Any ideas on what could be the problem? He's got a really old desktop Hewlett Packard PC.

Check the settings in the bios, enable the cdrom as slave. Is it older than a 486? Tell me something about the system.

if its really old its probably propritrary(sp?) and needs to plug into a soundcard.

i know thats how my mitsumi 2x and SB16 are. the port is even 40pin like IDE. but its not IDE

Isn't it weird that it won't even boot up period with it plugged in though? Wouldn't it still boot up but just not work?

Either you have 2 devices on one channel set to the same (Master, Slave) or what Colt45 said.

If it's a soundcard plugged CD-ROM (can't remember name) you are out of luck for upgrading...

There's 2 IDEs. One which the HD is on, and another which was free for the CDROM. I set it the CDROM to master since it's on its own cable.

sounds like you have an ide cable plugged in backwards or else two devices at the same time set to either slave/master on the same ide channel (cable)

If its an old creative drive and its proprietary then the cable, while a standard IDE cable, will only work on a proprietary sb card. And the cable goes in the opposite of ide. in other words, the red stripe does NOT go on the power plug side. One way I remember that proves its a proprietary cdrom is on the pins. If it says something like cd1 and cd2 then it is definately proprietary. Old proprietary CL sound blaster and cdrom drives let you attach 2 cdroms, but you had to tell them which one was number one and number two. I remember once plugging in the cable from my old cl cdrom backwards (which in the IDE world is the red pin near the power) and the freaking cable litterally melted and burned!

BTW, plugging a non-ide device into the ide ports, even if the cable fits, WILL knock out the ide devices on your system as it appears to be your case.

OK, so if this drive is proprietary, what do I need? I have a CDROM, the audio cable, and IDE cable. Now, what goes where? Does the IDE cable go into the sound card or what? And how does it connect to IDE if you do it that way? Can you please go there exact directions on how I have to go about installing this thing. The CDROM was from another computer, so I can probably get the sound card that's in that PC as well and install it.

the sound card will have a 40pin port on it. (physically identical to IDE, but its not IDE)

you say the drive is creative?

i remember creative bundling 2x panasonic drives with their SB16's, if thats any help for you.

i actually have one, it says creative on the front, but panasonic on the sticker (might say matsushita, thats panasonic's owner/company/thing)

OK, I found it is definitely proprietary and that it needs to plug into the sound card. I got the sound card, but my question is: Will I definitely be able to trasfer the sound card + CDROM from one PC to another?

The CD-rom is probaly to new for the old system, try checking the BIOS settings first. And make sure it is on the number two secondary channel. CD-Roms slow down hard drives if they are put on the primary channel.

OK, let me try this again. I put the CDROM and it didn't work because it needs the sound card as well cause the IDE goes from the ROM to the sound card. Before I didn't put the sound card in, that's why it wouldn't run. My question is that if I put the sound card inside the new box, and hook up the CDROM to it, will this work? It is possible to move these two from one computer to another right? What drivers will I need, just the sound card?
